DIGGERS CHARTER DEBATE - deadlylampshade - 5th July 2010

Sounds a very positive step. Is the Charter in full to be discussed in a general sense of acceptance or are parts of it to be agreed and developed?

Sorry...coming into this very late I know but perhaps it is timely to resurrect this debate in advance of the meeting. Having read these posts carefully and the previous ones suggested, I can't help feeling that the term "union" is clouding the perception of the important and , from what I can gather, essential requirements the Charter is laying down.

I have nothing against Unions before anyone leaps to their defence (not required!) but unfortunately the events leading up to the 1992 Act taints the memories of people too young to fully comprehend what happened and there is, rightly or wrongly, stigma attached to the term "union" - one would almost say it is a term which is verboten in the Private Sector but perhaps more "embraced" in the Public Sector.

Where is the money for archaeology sourced? (other than "Heritage" funding) Is it more Public or more Private? Whatever the answer to that question is depends on the perception of the term union one is then trying to deal with.

Perception management is a very strong tool and should not be ignored. It is not fraud; it is not "spin". It is the proactive management of a concept. I think that if the perception of what the Charter is about can be grounded in the meeting, there will be a very firm foundation for the advancement of a representative, collective and all embracing body endorsed to answer the needs of archaeologists at all levels of their careers in whichever part of the industry they work.

The endorsement comes from everyone signing up to it.

Hmm...lots of people are viewing this thread but no one is feeling inspired to contribute...

DIGGERS CHARTER DEBATE - Dinosaur - 7th July 2010

Judging by most of the posts over the last few months the majority of people posting on this and related threads are already in pretty entrenched camps.....:face-stir:

DIGGERS CHARTER DEBATE - BAJR - 7th July 2010

The Meeting is now on the 31st July... with enough folk to talk further... of course, these are all people who would like to see it happen... THere is always room for those that don't want to see it happen... to put forward criticisms..why not after all!

The baseline is to create a strong protected workforce that can acted as a strong motivated workforce for employers. It is sad that it often takes force (so to speak) to get things moving, but I learned that with the pay and conditions. BAJR always took the line that to advertise there was a bottom line and discussion lines were always open to work things out, however, if it was not possible, then there was a sanction - no advert. By the very fact that there was no advert meant that people would wonder.... why is this not on BAJR? Anyway. THe Unionisation is supported by all the groups talked about above on the previous page and so a concerted effort may actually just help UK archaeology rather than hinder it. Its what I believe, so I have to go with it. To quote Samuel Johnson "Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome. " So this is it... the attempt.

Actually recent experience suggests no advert, no difference :face-approve:

good for you... :face-kiss:

DIGGERS CHARTER DEBATE - Dinosaur - 14th July 2010

You're facing competition on the recruitment front from Facebook etc, maybe some nice piccies or something would help? :face-approve:

Of course that's bad news for people who've been out of digging for a while (see one of the other threads) since that form of recruitment's liable to pass them by :face-crying:

DIGGERS CHARTER DEBATE - BAJR - 14th July 2010

Competition is a good thing... what you have to consider is the protection element that BAJR provides. Anyone can facebook or blog an advert.. however, where does the advert come from in the first place? Second thing is ease of access. One stop weekly shop (mondays are popular) Then of course there is the trust aspect. Several adverts I have seen elsewhere give no indication of pay or conditions... you take what you get... While I always ask... hence BAJR approved sometimes appearing. Then there are the calls I make to get pay levels bumped up to BAJR levels...

People do have a choice... and in many cases the job is fine... but you no longer have the protection that BAJR offers - and in the end, it is like kicking away your lifejacket because the rain has stopped. Pay levels did not appear by magic.. Wink

remember that BAJR also appears on Facebook, with news, adverts and comment - with over 1800 fans)
