P Prentice Wrote:i probably should have said - it is not a distinction soley based on qualification.... but qualification is a necessary step towards chartered archaeologist
As if being chartered is likely to indicate any enhanced competence as an archaeologist any more than the letters 'MIFA' have

Except that it almost certainly will.....chartered status will most likely be achieved through a combination of academic and professional examination and experience gained in professional practice (the exact balance remains to be decided), but it will be something above and beyond what is possible today. To write it off before it has even been formulated is both short sighted and somewhat arrogant. It suggests there can never be anything better than the scenario that exists today....As David suggested on Saturday it might not ever put archaeologist on the same 'life-dependent' level as engineer, surgeon or even architect, but it will be an elevation above and beyond the mish-mash that currently exists.

I am writing a review of the conference for a future edition of the Diggers Forum newsletter which I understand will also contain summaries of the 6 papers given on Saturday.....I'd be happy to post that review here as well, but not until I have actually written it...which might be a couple of weeks...pressure of work etc etc

In the real world, however, the terms of the 'chartered status' will get written by exactly the same names that currently have the 'MIFA', so one would imagine they'll have to pitch the entry requirements in a self-inclusive way (or be out of a job)? - ergo chartered staus is unlikely to improve anything except the bank balances of the charter-ees :face-stir:

Well its good to see that you accept Chartered status may at least improve the salaries and benefits accruing to chartered members. That could be as good a selling point as any...

No really addressing the point under discussion though, which is improving archaeological standards. Your comments merely seem to suggest a willingness to enshrine the current mediocrity and indeed pay it more at the expense of everyone else? - and you wonder why there's an entrenched anti-IFA anti-Chartered contingent...

...:face-topic:...and you really aren't offering anything that's going to help Tool get by in his newly-found calling (since it's not obvious that the Charter thing is going to anything whatsoever for the digger end of things, merely make management a closed shop)

i fully expect, and hope, that there will be chartered diggers.
enshrining the current mediocrity surely is the status quo
