AUP - yes. I have an image of a small lad in tattered shorts and flat cap.. cobb;ld streets... endearing image...ahhhhhhh sigh... Wink

You are right Paul, that public facilities should nod be misused ... I remember the horror of one shop keeper when we trailed mud everywhere... she (quite rightly) made us nearly strip every time we went in after that.

Another day another WSI?

Ah! Now we’re getting to the real issues here.
Should male archaeologist have to share facilities with male contractors?
Should male contractors have to share facilities with male archaeologist?
Should female archaeologist have to share facilities with male archaeologist?

Should female archaeologist have to share facilities with female contractors?
Should anyone have to share anything with male contractors?
Should there be separate facilities for accountants?
Potentially we could have four separate toilets on a site with four employees.
But what happens if we have a disabled site visitor….?

The solution is perfectly clear. Every individual in the construction or any related industry including archaeology must have their own personal portaloo (fitted with oversink water heater and sanitary disposal facility). This portaloo is for the designated user's sole and private use, fited with a lock and key, and will be transported from site to site with them - like a trowel.

Of course there are advantages to this. The loos could be personalised, perhaps painted to personal taste, maybe some will even wish to add stone cladding or a small conservatory.

Obviously a better class of loo will be provided for specialist professionals, with heated padded seats, bidets and a concierge: those at BAJR grade 4 or above will also have a manicurist and masseur/masseuse at their disposal. Such facililities would be wasted on the roughnecks in the construction business of course, I despair of them - no doubt they will just pee up the back of their PP (Personal Portaloo).

We owe the dead nothing but the truth.

The problem with introducing a hierarchy of trim levels is that those further up the scale will also demand their toilets are situated closer to the digging. Obviously their time is more expensive and employers don’t want them spending hours walking to and from their luxury facilities. There is a need to maintain a degree of egalitarianism here, so I suggest all the Personal Portaloos are parked right next to the dig on the back of a low-loader. I feel sure the additional costs will be outweighed by the time saved not having to trek miles to the contractors’ compound…..

Happen - exactly the opposite. Levis and hard hats. I was actually very well looked after by the older generation and the employers -for the year - I wasn't allowed to do all sorts of things because there was a risk involved (like climbing ladders). I was taught basic H&S. I was proved with transport. The welfare facilities - I think they were flushing with running water on all the sites I worked on or there was a cafe nearby.

I did used to get hovis for tea.

Flushing facilities?! You’re lucky to have such good memories. Mine are more likely to be of working on sites where some friend of humanity has blocked the only site facility by depositing a week’s grief first thing Monday morning.
