Hope it goes well!! D Help BAJR and the PAS at Thornborough - Paul Barford - 10th August 2006 Quote:quote:Originally posted by DAZ 1900 Why are you as a responsible detectorist not "sure" about holding an artefact collection rally in an archaeologically sensitive area like this? It seems a pretty cut and dried case to me. The only justification that can be offered is the self-centred attitudes of a number of people determined to ride roughshod across any other concerns to fulfil their own personal acquisitive "needs". I would have thought a responsible detectorist would be "sure" that (archaeological presence or not), this is a rally that they should not support in any way. As for "at least", no matter how hard they try the PAS, David and his "Team" will be in a less than satisfactory situation to do what is required to produce archaeologically useful results. It is highly irresponsible to set up a rally as this one was without adequate provision from the outset for full and proper recording (funny how nobody seems to have hurried to answer my point about the Corfe Castle Rally "working together"). Inviting a few token archaeologists along is no resolution of the problem on this site, or any other, nor helpful in getting a resolution of the overall problems produced by the artefact-hunting "Rally Season" (see thread in the Understanding Detecting section). While I do not doubt for a moment David's good intentions, I personally feel that the archaeological presence here will only legitimise the despoilation of a particularly sensitive (and controversial) part of the archaeological record. This can only have negative results alongside the postive ones of "getting a few of the finds on record" before they disappear into a multitude of scatered personal collections. While I am sure we all wish them the best of luck in getting as much information as possible from the artefact hunters before the weekend is over and it disappears, I dont think this should be allowed to obscure the wider issues. Steve may try using faecal metaphors to crudely dismiss these concerns, they nevertheless are real and require open discussion. It is only on the basis of such openness and free exchange of a variety of opinions that one can even begin the process of "working together". So yes, let's light those candles and take a good HARD look at what lies in the darkness around the artefact hunting issues. Let's bring them out into the light and take a good hard look instead of just stumbling around in the half light or turning a blind eye. And a few BAJR archaeological observers going along to Thornborough may encourage this sort of serious exchange of views instead of the head-patting and blind-eye-turning we so often see from the PAS and other parts of the pro-detecting lobby. Help BAJR and the PAS at Thornborough - Steve-B - 10th August 2006 Quote:quote:Steve may try using faecal metaphors to crudely dismiss these concerns Which, and lets make it perfectly clear you instigated Paul... Quote:quote: to lace it with a strong and quick-working laxative, All you have done is confirm that you do indeed talk ****e a majority of the time Paul in your obsessive loathing of the hobby. Anyway, putting a side for the moment that you talk ****e, I have to say that I do not know how you can seriously sit over there in Poland and condemn from a distance.. if you truly have serious concerns about this rally then the very least you can do is attend, find out FACTS first hand and then present your arguements.... but of course you couldnt, because the FACTS might not fit your arguements. http://www.detector-distribution.co.uk Help BAJR and the PAS at Thornborough - Alfie - 10th August 2006 I have to say I think that this forum is not the place it once was. Steves' last post was, in my opinion against the AUP and besides that not in the spirit of BAJR. David? Help BAJR and the PAS at Thornborough - Steve-B - 10th August 2006 And Pauls suggestion to feed laxative to detectorists is accpetable I take it?.. personally I found it offensive to say the least. http://www.detector-distribution.co.uk Help BAJR and the PAS at Thornborough - BAJR Host - 10th August 2006 I am glad to see that PAul agrees that A BAJR(ish) presence is a good thing. I would also ask for a cessestion of this thread - it is not a discussion about Rallies, it is one about asking for support at this particular rally. There is enough S#### in the world without adding to it. Steves post passes the AUP as far as I am concerned just as Pauls squeezes past as well. THis may be an emotive subject - though I am willing to wait and see what happens rather than discuss what might happen. I will be reporting on here the full story, warts and all... with a view to seeing where both archaeolgists need to take a look at what they do and how detectorists have to understand what they do. I intend to be fair, even handed and honest. If I feel that I am compromised on my principals I will say so, If I feel that the general attitude is of cooperation and understanding I will say so... The reason I am trusted by both detectorist groups and archaeolgoists is that I have no agenda, no reason to ... and am quite open to views from anyone. I can be swayed and convinced by a convincing arguement if it contains both reasons why what I believe in is wrong AND what can be done to make it better in a positive way. I try not to deal in negatives, in NO's or in though shalt do it because I say so.. (though life would be easier if everyone jsut did as I say! ) I will not accept any more arguement about rallies on this section of the forum.. they will be deleted... if you wish to er.. discuss Rallies... there is a section for it... but I warn in advance, that constructive discussion is better than just pronouncements or abuse. I tried to lighten the thread with a joke about liking Ex-Lax.. but as that did not work.. then beware... I am online... I am not going to let this thread be moved in any other direction. I appreciate both the support and the gentle and polite concerns... These are things that can be understood and dealbt with.. I take them on board, and will be more 'aware' becasue of them. Thanks y'all! Another day another WSI?
