Funny how some of the 'trusts' in archaeology who aren't interested in making a profit seem to be some of worst culprits when it comes to undercutting, monopolism and trying to wipe out commercial competitors.... :face-thinks:

Units renowned love of Trusts and council pension grabbers.
but that said. there are Trusts and Trusts.
York, Canterbury for example. - though the expansion of York under other names is a worrying sign.
The bigger the company the bigger the battle for pay and conditions.

My limited experience of working within an archaeological unit that was a charity was that to the people doing the work it seemed like any other unit. Not enough time or money, efficiency being the key and sample excavation.
The only difference seemed to be at the top.......the directors and board of trustees getting fat by creaming off 'project management fees' and expenses etc to make sure the company didn't make a profit on paper.
Bet there is some sort of tax dodge for the already ultra rich involved too.

But what if the system was based on a more guild related socio-pragmatic model, akin to the Fabian vision? It'd still be capitalistic but profits would be shared within a market economy?
