So explain to me how an organisation with no competition would have any incentive to maintain/enforce any standards? (not that it does now anyway) Doesn't seem to work with governments so why should it work with IFA?

duh. said organisation does not need an incentive to maintain/enforce standards because standards are enshrined in membership criteria
and before you repeat your bleat, if nobody produces any evidence that standards are not being adhered to then clearly the membership cant or has no need to act against any miscreants

What are you talking about? This is a bit like the way people complain at elections 'it doesn't matter who you vote for the government always get in'. What you are proposing is a system of complete anarchy, which is essentially what we have at present.

I'm proposing a free market (where hopefully quality would float to the top anyway), which is what IFA doesn't want. Better to have no rules than ones which everyone ignores while claiming to adhere to - was shown another absolutely comedy report from an RO yesterday (accepted by a curator I happen to know is a MIFA), thought dealing with pot and animal bone trench by trench rather than context by context went out in the 50s!

In the free market Quality with a big Q,is ALWAYS the first thing to suffer. What will happen will be that the CHEAPEST float to the top, the rest will either go under or become as cheap. If we are ALL IfA Royal or otherwise, we are still inside a free market ....

Dead right. Cheapness also lowers wages. Think on it...
Perhaps instead of the IFA ineffectually imposing standards, we ought to have a government agency doing it. Then it would have some teeth and would be able to legally enforce standards and do useful things like standarising recording systems.
I'd have much rather have had EH do this than the IFA private members club.

May the small gods save us all from a government body...especially in the present Tory led environment...They have started to trash the green agenda already....
