I have asked the unit to comment - and also informed them I will be naming them, as it is important to know, not jsut becasue of the rumours, not because of the need to 'out' anyone... but so that others can know ...

Yet again the evil forces are out to get us ! having dug on the 'circuit' for donkey's years, often losing money after travelling up down and across the UK at my own expense, and not receiving any subsistence from many units, this is completely outrageous. Yet another kick in the teeth for the overworked underpaid archaeologist. How we are to attract younger staff into the profession is beyond me. If this tax issue was backdated most of my friends and colleagues in archaeology would be immediately bankrupted !!Sad

How much have you talked to the taxman/been to see them

from what you have said you have plenty to fight with

I reiterate how much have you talked to the taxman/been to see them

If you are getting nowhere you have to bring the good in with the bad. It is personal.

I don’t understand why the tax man, if they want to go down this route, have limited themselves to one year, how did they get all the names, this also does not sound like the actions of an auditor

how do you guage the relationship between the unit and the institue of archeto**er* rather than between you and the ifa

is this a council trust? have you been to see a counciler?

VoR why are you an apologist its common law can be fought

trying to cut through the hyperbole - who are these 'evil forces'? and what have they done before? what exactly is outrageous?

in response to voice of reason; the evil forcws are of course the Inland Revenue who have previously investigated myself and others during periods of employment and so called self employment, causing great distress to those concerned. As if we are going to keep a full record of all accommodation, subsistence, provided transport etc when moving from job to job ! its sometimes difficult enough to get payslips P60s etc from employers. As for outrageous, the whole issue of taxing accomodation etc is totally !! Colleagues in the construction industry have had no problems with accomodation and subsistence being taxed so it seems the taxman is preying on the archaeology profession again.

The taxman isn't out to get archaeologists. As VoR said these are not new rules and the units should have been aware of these. Or at least their accountants should have! I suspect some of the large units were aware of it but took the risk. When I had my very first job and got accommodation my parents both knew it should be taxed. I don't know why construction people get away with it... but if they're main place of work is defined in their contract as a main office and a job is a large distance from that office then accommodation/subs aren't taxable.
Unit of 1 - Sorry why are archaeologists special enough to not have to follow this law?? Yes it's crappy for those who have been stung. I think only going back a year on this one audit is pretty lucky for the rest of us! If we are a profession then we need to act like it.

I'm working for the unit in question at the moment and we were discussing the situation at work today.
Am I right in thinking that if the job is far enough from the office then accommodation can be provided and you will not be taxed for it? But if it's close you get taxed?
If so, in situations where the job is relatively close to the office, could a unit rent houses as usual then charge workers a nominal rent of say £10 per week? Any amount charged could possibly be added on to usual pay.
Would this work or would it be seen as tax evasion?

(Thought I should mention that I'm not part of management and have not discussed any of this with management!)

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

tax evasion i AM AFRAID... I asked them! nice idea though... great minds think alike. I have asked them to comment on how they are dealing with this.. now... are they paying more? or paying the same and expecting you to pay accom out of it?

I live locally so I have no idea what they're doing at the moment, I think that everyone they're employing at the moment are local too. I'm not sure what they'll do once they need more diggers (which they'll probably need next spring) but I'm guessing that once they're named over this they may have trouble attracting people unless they do something quite dramatic. As they're my local unit none of this has really affected me (that's not to say that I've not had issues with some things in the past) but they have ruffled a lot of feathers and I know quite a few good diggers that have said they'll never work for them again.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Accommodation - taxed? - trowelfodder - 1st November 2008

Im not neccessarily one to tow the company line but in the units defence they were pretty helpfull when my new tax code came trough which implied i was being charged the full amount and not a percentage of it and they phoned the tax office for me to get clarification on the situation after i had no joy on getting the information out of them myself, and promptly phone me back to assure me my tax bill wasnt as high as i thought!!

I, and a number of other staff have contacted the tax office and they have on all occassions to my knowledge been spectacularly unhelpful and unsympathetic.

It is almost luck of the draw which unit was going to get stung with this first but as i have said before this doesnt help those of us affected and i know of a number of diggers who are no longer excepting away jobs until the situation has been resolved and as a result have been forced out of the archaeological proffession.
