Ah, I forgot that the said fantastically preserved piece of wood that had been kicking about the place for two thousand years, including 700 years in some wet topsoil in Bath and then being washed under the tap by a "Postgraduate" had traces of blood in it! (From a nail, too).
I loved Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, but I laughed at the people who whined about the Audi Quattro having the wrong colour trim AND NOW I HAVE TURNED INTO ONE OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!!! Dammit! [:I]

Having now watched it due to the miracle of iplayer i have to say it was ace! Clearly complete tripe and not at all reflective of genuine archaeology (or is that Time Team/Meet the Ancestors/every other archaeology programme on TV?) but at least fun. Indeed, some of the dialogue was terrible, the plot pretty silly, and the commentary on modern society heavy handed and laboured, but these were far worse problems than the depiction of archaeology. It did look a bit like they'd tried in that area.
Anyone who's read the Kathy Reichs books and watched Bones will see how loosely based in reality the world of TV is - she is a highly respected Foresic Anthropologist (or whatever her proper title is) who acts as an adviser to the programme and it still has quite ridiculous things like a 3D hologram machine (or do they really exist? I want one!)
I think a lot of the negative comments about Bonekickers were a bit unfair at the end of the day; it is a drama after all. I'm sad enough to say that I enjoy any programme about archaeology, no matter how bad, with the exception of Extreme Archaeology, Treasure Hunters (or whatever it was called), and Lost Treasures with Mark Olly, in which people who supposedly know what they are talking about, perhaps with one exception in that list, make complete berks of themselves.

Yesterday, as a result of the program, I had a telephone call from a council person who asked if geofizz could be used to find spare spaces in a cemetery for new burials. Apparently they have lost the records that go back to the 1880s. Somebody must have tried geofizz in cemeteries as it must a common problem or a good place to practice? Has anybody tried it? I have suggested taking off the topsoil and looking for disturbance and gave them my day rate.

The thing is Red Earth if they had just put it on then most people would have had a bit of a grumble and either watched it or turned off. But they said in a lot of the publicity that this was an accurate portrayal of archaeology today. Which straight away has people watching for the faults, and they end up hoisted by their own pertard.
I think the company that make the 3D holographic machine also make the geophysics machine in Bonekickers

I hadn't seen much of the pre-publicity, although I suppose it is possible that the programme being made by one group of people and the publicity by another led to some slightly different visions of the overall product! They can't justifiably have suggested that a programme which includes pieces of the true cross, miracles, and huge underground chambers, is based on any kind of reality.
These 3D hologram/incredibly detailed geophys graphics machines are probably so expensive that they can only be purchased by archaeologists working on TV programmes.

One thing I was wondering, now I think about it (must do some work!), is did they have to do an evaluation in advance of digging those trenches for the programme? Assuming that bit was filmed anywhere near Bath one would have assumed that they would - I can seen the headlines 'archaeology programme stopped due to discovery of archaeology'!
The report would make interesting reading:
