When is National not? - BAJR Host - 12th July 2008 A quick thought... just came to me as I was looking through the vast 'National Archaeology Week' guide.. nice! What I thought was .. as Scotland has its own Archaeology Month http://www.scottisharchaeology.org.uk/projects/sam.html and 'National' is defined by all the constituent parts of the 'United Kingdom' ie... England, Wales, Scotland and NI (and Isle of Man!) how can an event be described as National when it is missing a third of the mainland? Surely it is England and Wales Archaeology Week. [hm] Its not so much splitting hairs... or being a jocko nationalist ... rather a fair comment: I am sure there would be comment if we in Scotland called our event National Archaeology Week... even though it did not include England and Wales? Or would that be acceptable. "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu When is National not? - Weegie - 12th July 2008 I'd need to know more about the history of the National Archaeology event to give a definitive answer, but I suspect that it did start off as a national intitiative, but Scotland is now doing its own thing, as it is in so many areas. I think it's also fair to say that the English/Welsh July event is better-timed in relation to school holidays than it is back hame. I'm currently taking part in a weekend event at Fort Cumberland in sunny Portsmouth, and we're having a great time. Any BAJR-ites in the area are welcome to come along tomorrow. It's free! Brian When is National not? - BAJR Host - 12th July 2008 The timing... could not agree more... our month seems to be timed to coincide with shorter days and wetter weather..! Would love to see the inner workings of Fort Cumberland! Let us know how it goes, and any other bits of goss.! ps... good answer! "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu When is National not? - lucy78green - 12th July 2008 Think Northern Ireland did archaeology month in June, but maybe longer??? I never went to any http://www.ni-environment.gov.uk/built/built-events/archyday.htm Lucy When is National not? - RedEarth - 13th July 2008 That old chestnut - I suspect it is the case that the National Event was first and the Scottish one came later, but I am quite probably wrong. On the same issue of defining National and forgetting to include Scotland see Limmy.com (think that's right!) for an hilarious commentary on Britain's Got Talent, with the emphasis on Britain. As for the time of year - speaking as someone who lives far enough north that certain people think I come from Scotland, I can't say that July isn't the best choice as it often pishes down with rain. May or September would be a better bet! When is National not? - BAJR Host - 13th July 2008 May for me please... (september ... I only ever seem to remember pishing down then as well! ) The oldest chestnuts are often the ones best roasted... "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu When is National not? - Weegie - 13th July 2008 All finished for the weekend at Fort Cumberland. We got over 1600 people over the two days, with most coming on the Sunday as usual. The mock excavation was particularly popular, with over 300 little angels trying their hand at a spot of digging today. Absolutely cream crackered! The weather stayed fine, except for our party last night when it pished it down. Mr Hostie - you'd be welcome to visit FC any time you're in the neighbourhood. Pevsner called it 'perhaps the finest piece of 18th-century defensive architecture in England', which means it's not quite as good as Fort George. Any BAJR readers who want to see it can come along on Heritage Open Days in September - book early to avoid disappointment! Khufu When is National not? - BAJR Host - 13th July 2008 Excellent News Weegie... thats alotta people!! by the way... don't you mean Scottish Heritage Open Days which we have extended to include other parts of our island.. [:p] and how true about bonnie Fort George! (one hell of a fort to draw I can tell ya!) "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu |
