Ebooks - New concept for coping with our records? - BAJR Host - 19th October 2008 http://www.plasticlogic.com/ Check this! thoughts? :face-thinks: Imagine reference books? Imagine documents, reports? Hmmm BAJR investigates! "I don't have an archaeological imagination.." Borekickers Ebooks - New concept for coping with our records? - BAJR Host - 19th October 2008 I may talk with them... (well why not!) are there any specifics you would want asked? "I don't have an archaeological imagination.." Borekickers Ebooks - New concept for coping with our records? - trowelmonkey - 20th October 2008 OOOh, pretty! Just wait until we can get wall paper like that! Seriously though, this is the direction I think information presentation is going- all intergrated, interactive and light-weight once we get on top of long term archival stability issues. Wonder how it gets on in the damp? Imagine, no more having to pester the surveyor toprint out up-to date plans for the whole site, because it'll be there up loaded onto your very own space age clipboard! On a related tangent, anyone know how EH are getting along with the INTRASIS trials? Ebooks - New concept for coping with our records? - BAJR Host - 20th October 2008 http://www.intrasis.com/engelska/index_eng.htm in case people were wondering! "I don't have an archaeological imagination.." Borekickers Ebooks - New concept for coping with our records? - andy.bicket - 21st October 2008 Now, if only you had an INTRASIS type GIS, but then linked into all your site documentation which was recorded digitally, then you'd never need another sheet of paper, and all the context sheets etc could be put straight into whatever database you wished, checking could be done on site and never again waded through months later in the office...hang on...! http://vera.rdg.ac.uk/ Excellent! Ebooks - New concept for coping with our records? - BAJR Host - 21st October 2008 Most interesting indeed.. nice link. I have to confess to be about to try a full digital recording in Croatia, usign Compaq tablets running OZIExlporer and a formed database, the machine would also be linked to a camera and GPS. Now this all records in real time, and joy of joy, I will be able to 'see' what I am doing, as I do it. The down side?? well... apart from saving all the time in retyping in the info from the barely legible record sheets, and going through all the photos, trying to remember what that particular rock was - thus meaning we will head to the beach earlier! THe main trouble, which I seriously worry about... a) weather... try survey in p##n rain or similar...? b) not having a paper copy (ergo.. printout every day of that days work) We are moving forwrd... VERA looks great... so does INTASIS, there are many others... can't wait for the future..! "I don't have an archaeological imagination.." Borekickers Ebooks - New concept for coping with our records? - andy.bicket - 21st October 2008 The joy of the VERA stuff is that at any one time, the data is stored at 3 remote locations so little chance of losing the data at the same time everywhere. Plus they use digital pens, on real paper (camera in digital pen uses tiny marks on the paper to work everything out, whilst real biro writes the data), so there is a paper record of everything created at the same time (4 records!). Tablets are a bit less reliable apparently, and drawing sketches isn't as good. If you really wanted, apparently it is possible to have context sheets printed out but more pricey, rather than using blank books that you write the field titles in (e.g. context = ####)...simplicity itself! Cost of pens is less than tablets, and will pay for themselves quickly as post-ex time is redundant. Data goes straight into a database...rather than a massive non-searchable Word document table (NO NO NO!!!) With mobile broadband becoming a tangible reality this kind of kit is becoming increasingly useful...sign me up! |
