Education and Outreach - BAJR Host - 12th November 2008 Looks like the shift has started... Education and Outreach 3 posts just gone up including this one: http://www.bajr.org/employment/UKEmploymentDetails.asp?ID=7908 Why am I plugging this one ??? Well it is part of tha HEFA system... where archaeology is used not to get people into archaeology, but as a vehicle to give people confidence about going into Higher/Further Education. Read about it here (plus more in an exclusive in the January edition of Past Horizons) http://www.arch.cam.ac.uk/aca/fa/index.html This is a great initiaitve and just what archaeology should be about... not just the pot in the ground, but the opportunities it opens up. I happen to know of another great project happening .. where ex drug and alchohol dependants are going to be learning archaeology, as part of a regaining of self respect, external respect and learning skills and responsibilty ... perhaps you would care to elaborate?? BAJR will support this project. :face-approve: "I don't have an archaeological imagination.." Borekickers Education and Outreach - Austin Ainsworth - 12th November 2008 Hi Dave, I'm in the middle of setting up the project for recovering alcohol and drug dependants, when all the stakeholders are on board I'll write an article for Past Horizons as well as posting full details here. What I can say is that so far we've identified a site for a training excavation, the next thing is to train the participants in research skills so that the group can produce a DBA. Apologies for the lack of detail. I'm also setting up a project for street artists which will look at the historic roots of graffiti, (Viking graffiti at Skara Brae, Roman graffiti at Pompeii, etc); then look at contemporary examples in Gloucester by setting up a database (if possible, similar to the Graffiti Archaeology website). The study will be followed by an art project which brings all the project's elements together and displays them to the wider public of Gloucester as an exhibition. - Lots of interest for this, youth groups in Gloucester can't wait to get started. Education and Outreach - BAJR Host - 12th November 2008 Thanks for that... did not want to name and praise you its a brilliant project.. and I must confess I told the Daily MAil about it... (you could here the thud of lead balloons!) You have BAJR at your disposal! "I don't have an archaeological imagination.." Borekickers Education and Outreach - chiz - 13th November 2008 Oz, if you are interested in more local graffiti, I wrote a short paper on graffiti on church roof leads in a village in Wilts. I can try and dig it out if its of interest? Education and Outreach - Austin Ainsworth - 13th November 2008 Thanks Bob, that would be of interest. If anybody else has anything relevant then feel free to get in touch with details. Oz Education and Outreach - BAJR Host - 13th November 2008 http://bajrblog.wordpress.com/2008/11/13/professional-training-in-the-historic-environment-20089/ OXFORD UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL TRAINING IN THE HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT 2008/9 DEtails on the training perhaps more for management.. but a lot of interesting day courses... "I don't have an archaeological imagination.." Borekickers Education and Outreach - Austin Ainsworth - 13th November 2008 I'm booked on the Community Archaeology day for the 17th, anybody else going - I'll see you there. Education and Outreach - mercenary - 13th November 2008 I'm curious about experiences of any field archs out there who have managed to land education and outreach jobs. My partner has been trying to do this for years with no success. She is otherwise extremely skilled and motivated and has no obvious personality flaws, but has utterly failed to crack this field. We have come to the admittedly slightly paranoid conclusion that there is a prejudice against 'dirty' archaeologists in some related fields. [?] Education and Outreach - titmonkey - 13th November 2008 I've been trying to get into this area recently. I tried for an IfA workplace learning bursary in outreach and education, got an interview but unfortunately no joy! I'm just going to keep trying for similar things that come up in future, but if anyone's got any tips please let me know! I did my PGCE (KS2) last year, so I'm hoping that it's going to be of some benefit! Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Education and Outreach - matthew.law - 13th November 2008 Hi Austin, I'm also booked on the course on the 17th. See you there! Matt |
