I think that the whole point about Prospect/the IPMS is that it represents people from a great many professions, not only archaeologists. Think on, brothers and sisters: if every archaeologist in Britain downed tools tomorrow, who'd notice? Union representation is only meaningful when you've got enough solidarity over a wide enough section of society that, if it comes to the ultimate sanction of withdrawing your labour, the effects will be tangible by those to whom the actual issues are irrelevant.

There is indeed, especially if other people not within the DF expect more from them than they signed up to do in the first place.

In reply to Monty's point - yes, I was told I was a 'boss' and not able to join early on (as I said right at the start of this thread).

Perhaps part of the issue here is people not knowing exactly what the 'job description' for each of these organisations is? Certainly IfA's role has often been mis-understood in the past. So what exactly are you thining Mr Hosty? I'm with Bob that I don't think another 'union' is a good idea. I have a reasonable idea what IfA does, I have no idea what Prospect do any more, I don't really know what DF do, as I'm not in it.

(BTW, as a boost to DF work, when I was more involved in the Validation Committee for IFA they did stirling work in arguing successfully for a better understanding and rating of 'diggers' work - something I fully agreed with!)

(Sorry if this all sounds slightly negative, I've used up all my energy today explaining how archaeology and planning works to Job Centre Plus and pointing out that they can't spell 'archaeology'......)

sign me up too! and many colleagues will join without doubt ! this is a bold step indeed but definitely needed, for too long we have had to put up with all that is bad in the profession. Also i consider that prospect are too wide ranging to be an effective voice for archaeology.

oldgirl your welcome to join Smile

Loads of work.. indeed... and I have loads to think about .. will post a proper responce at the weekend.. (am out in the field.. so give me time to think)

I think there is a way.. just what way is it....

expect something... it won't be the saving of UK archaeology... thats not possible... it won't be a union... thats not realistic.. expect something though..!
