Across the North Sea: Call for Papers - BAJR Host - 1st December 2008 Across the North Sea: Later historical archaeology in Britain and Denmark c. 1500-2000 AD 22nd-27th September2009, Odense and Copenhagen CALL FOR PAPERS The Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology, The University of Southern Denmark, Odense City Museums and the City Museum of Copenhagen are pleased to announce a conference on post-medieval archaeology in Britain and Denmark to be held in Odense, Denmark, with an additional programme in Copenhagen. We invite participants from both countries, and others working on relevant themes. There will be a maximum of 60 participants. The conference will be held at The City Museum MøntergÃ¥rden (Odense City Museums), the University of Southern Denmark, and The City Museum of Copenhagen. The conference language is English. The conference will examine - The archaeology of contact between Denmark and Britain in the later historical period - Current approaches to âPost-Medievalâ, âIndustrialâ and âlater historicalâ archaeology in both countries - The similarities and differences in the development of society in the two nations - Since Denmark lies at the crossroads of the North Sea, the Baltic, and Scandinavia, and both countries open onto the Atlantic world, broader issues of international contact, technology transfer and of identity will also be discussed. Session themes may include: - Methodology, theory and history of âlater historical archaeologyâ - Urban and rural archaeology - Buildings - The rural economy - Relationships between the material and the historical record - Transferring the Industrial revolution to Denmark - The archaeology of the North Sea and its coasts - Identity in the material record â England/Scotland, Denmark/Scandinavia - Different Protestantisms - Heritage management, development control and competitive tendering in Britain and Denmark - Developing a European archaeology of the later 2nd millenium. Proposals for papers on any of these themes are invited. Papers should be 25 minutes long (ie a half-hour slot including 5 minutes discussion). We are planning to publish the papers as a Society for Post-Medieval Archaeology monograph; details will be sent to contributors later. We expect to be able to offer some financial support to overseas speakers; details will depend on the outcome of funding applications, so cannot be confirmed at this stage.
