Quotes for archaeologists - Austin Ainsworth - 23rd December 2008 Several years ago I was working on a large site in London and became increasingly hacked off as the months went by, it seemed to me that I was being asked to dig more than my fair share of the larger features. While others were working in pairs or trios digging ankle deep gullies I was digging quarry pits, solo. One of the books I read to relieve the tedium of the lunch breaks was Terry Pratchett's 'Carpe Jugulum'. One quote still stands out and sums up my memories of that site. "The reward for toil had been more toil. If you dug the best ditches they gave you a bigger shovel". Have any other BAJRites got any quotes which sum their on-site experiences? ![]() Quotes for archaeologists - BAJR Host - 23rd December 2008 Well... in the Discworld vein.. and I ain't saying where! "All dwarfs (or diggers) have beards and wear up to twelve layers of clothing. Gender is more or less optional." -- (Terry Pratchett, Guards! Guards!) "Gie's a Job.." Prof. 'Dolly' Parton Quotes for archaeologists - BAJR Host - 23rd December 2008 fancy popping this on the facebook page... need a bit of fun there too! "Gie's a Job.." Prof. 'Dolly' Parton Quotes for archaeologists - Austin Ainsworth - 23rd December 2008 Will do. ![]() ![]() Quotes for archaeologists - Dirty Dave Lincoln - 24th December 2008 Austin, I can sympathise on that as about several years ago it seemed I always did the mega features (on my own) and quite often got peeved by others not getting such to dig.In such situations the lines from the film 'Zulu' are apt: Private "why is it us sarge? why us?" Sergeant Bourne "because we're here lad,and nobody else-just us" I will admit their is a slight difference between dealing with 'many features' and four thousand screaming Zulus all trying to kill you. But the "oh well,we might as well just get on with it" attitude of Colour Sergeant Bourne is priceless.
