Claiming unemployment benefit in the EU/EAA - kevin wooldridge - 8th January 2009

Unemployed UK archaeologists who are seeking work in other EU/EAA countries are entitled to continue receiving their Jobseekers Allowance providing certain conditions are fulfilled. The DWP website tells all (but without going into too much detail). A definite is to get hold of form E303 (the unemployment equivalant of the health insurance form E101).

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/international/sa29/benefits_01.asp

Basic provisions are:

? you have been receiving unemployment benefit for at least four weeks in the country, which you are leaving. This period can be shortened, however, by the unemployment service concerned

? you apply to the competent institution for Document E 303;

? you register with the employment services in the country you have moved to within seven working days of your arrival;

? you comply with the control procedures organised by the Member State where you are residing.

Good thread sir. Greetings from Cyprus. Unfortunately, one has to have worked here for at least three months before entitlement to benefits of any kind. The long-term (UK) unemployed however, can receive up to three months benefits at their established UK rates whilst seeking work in other EU member states. One also has to be a registered resident in Cyprus to even get considered for benefits. It would be worth pointing out too, that even with huge amounts of EU law in place, not all EU nations enforce or facilitate those laws. In the same way that the UK chose to opt out of all sorts of laws that would have provided its citizens with new rights, other member states are in the habit of cherry-picking from the legal basket. To survive in Cyprus for example, one needs to provide evidence that one will not be a burden upon the state. You need a job or, evidence on paper of a healthy bank balance.[:0]

Don't forget that the reverse is true, as well: if you have been working and paying tax in another EU country, you might be entitled on your return to Blighty to claim benefit as though you were a citizen of that country. This really makes 'em sweat at the DSS, if you've been working somewhere like Germany where your unemployment benefit is 60% of your previous wage. :face-stir:
