The government has announced two measures to help unemployment internships and grants of £2500 to employers taking on people who have been unemployed for six months. Are these good things?
If one takes on an intern how does this fit in with the BAJR and IFA minimum pay rates?

Definitely good things in my opinion....as long as there is no exploitation ....which often occurs within schemes of this type.

Exploitation? This scheme is more like slavery!!
The government is proposing that firms can take on graduates as 'interns' for 3 months and pay them the equivalant of the current student subsistence grant (c£3000 per year). The government is also proposing to offer subsidies to firms of £2500 per head. At the end of the 3 months it is hoped that firms will continue to employ the graudate at the normal 'graduate' going rate. But of course the scheme doesn't guarantee a job......
Apart from blowing away the proncipal of the minimum wage, can anyone really see any graduate taking on such a crap proposal.....

I used to employ students on in effect work experience but the new employment laws, the BAJR and IFA minima made this all too difficult.
Surely an internship is better than being a volunteer for nowt.

NO NO NO!
The problem isn't a lack of skilled people, its a lack of jobs for skilled people. Using 'interns' will not give the intern anything other than a few cv points. If Kevin's right on the figures, you'd be better off on the dole, volunteering on the sly, or just looking for work in a decent sector.
Pay a decent wage for a decent skilled worker.
If there is commercial work out there then units should bid for it based on using professional staff, this would take us back to units using volunteer staff to do sites for less money, and with less quality, whilst other units bid based on 100% waged, its not going to help the site staff one iota. Calling it work experience was always a shabby excuse. And lets face it, you used to be able to get an internship with a unit fresh out of school with no work experience and get paid the BAJR minumum, it was called being a site assistantDr Wardle, my heart bleeds for you.
I'm sorry for those graduating this year, but you're better off not starting in archaeology!!

Why not apprenticeships with confirmed work at the end... rather than moveing onto the next intern..
In France (where they should be more militant) over 20% of the workforce in some area is made up with a conveyor belt of interns.. kept until the time runs out... and then a new one brought in...
There are however benefits.. and a person CAN gain valuable experience... a nd can get paid, and if certain restrictions on the use of interns is created... hmmmmmm debate on?

Site Assistant vacancies nowadays (ok none at the moment)always require applicants to have already gained some, and usually lots of experience, properly regulated internships/apprenticeships have to be a good thing for the profession ..................
