Trafalger Plinth - BAJR Host - 26th February 2009
Anthony Gormley is creating a living artwork on the Trafalger Square 4th Plinth... where for the next year one person every hour will stand on the plinth as a snapshot of today... BAJR is wondering whether any London Archaeologist is prepared to sign up and represent Archaeology ??

Must have a head for heights - I heard a report on the radio this morning- its a twenty five foot drop off the south side of the plinth into Trafalgar Square. They are installing a tasteful safety net though!!

Inverse trench? Hosty, I'm shocked.Surely you wouldn't get into a trench with a 25ft balk? Be great to work on a site that deeply stratified though!

I don't recall the archaeology under Trafalgar Square ever being more than about two metres deep. I did a watching brief when the drains were renewed in the late 1980's although earlier work revealed some Saxon barrel lined wells that went down further. Must admit it was one of the more bizarre experiences, working in an iconic tourist spot with groups of Japanese tourists wanderingin through the site entrance and taking photos of the empy fountains and construction kit before the harassed site construction manager hurtled from his portakabin and chucked them off.
