I was not sure whether to post this up as it is not really work related but here goes -

Apart from things like slaves and raw mineral wealth did the late PRIA Brits and/or Romano-Brits export anything of note to the Roman Empire? We know plenty about fine wares or amphorae with various contents etc being imported but what about the other way around? (Not suggesting that there was a trade in 'empties' like you used to get with pop bottles). Any leads for ancient sources much appreciated.

I think that Caesar mentions the slaves and hunting dogs as being particularly good.

Britian was also exporting gold from Carmarthenshire, tin from Cornwall and (i think) copper from the Great Orme. The early date of the fort at Charterhouse on Mendip suggests that they made taking control of the lead extraction a priority, although I don't know of any definate evidence of pre Roman extraction...

All good stuff.Thanks to you all. I knew about the mineral exploitation but the dogs are a new one for me. Having had a whippet or two in my time I would like to think that these for particularly liked for hunting...wishful thinking maybe. Any other ideas?

amiable drudge is right about British enamel work,there was a thing about it in a Current Archaeology in Septemebr time last year, it sort of claims that all the best enamel work came from Britain and they've found some examples in the the rest of the Roman Empire, can't remember how they tested it though

@Wombat, I have read in a few places about "Celtic" beer but have always thought the word "Celtic" was a bit wishy-washy. But you reckon it was was exported from the Peoples Republic of Wales and the rest of our sun-drenched isle?
