Recent Reports on Scottish SMRs/HERs
In late 2008 and early 2009, each of Scotland?s 16 archaeology services was visited, as part of the Local Authority Archaeological Liaison Project, and the results of these visits are summarised in three reports:

?Delivering Efficient Data Management, RCAHMS Report 2009
?Polygonisation, a joint RCAHMS, ALGAO Scotland HER Forum & Historic Scotland Report 2009
?The IT capabilities of the Scottish Sites and Monuments Records, a joint RCAHMS, ALGAO Scotland HER Forum & Historic Scotland Report 2009
The report, Delivering Efficient Data Management: Local Authority Archaeological Liaison, provides an update on the Assessment of Scotland?s Sites and Monuments Records for RCAHMS, produced in 1999 and known as the ?Baker Report?. It also reviews the significant achievements made during the last decade and assesses where co-operation between RCAHMS and Scotland?s archaeology services can develop.
The Polygonisation report looks at the needs for polygonised Historic Environment data and identifies who is producing polygons and why they are producing them. The report goes on to catalogue the existing resources, identifies the key audiences and highlights where there is a mismatch between the audience and the resources.

The report, The IT capabilities of the Scottish Sites and Monuments Records, examines both the existing IT infrastructure of the Scottish SMRs/HERs and current developments in Geographic Information policy. The report catalogues the existing infrastructure and goes on to highlights how initiatives such as the INSPIRE directive, Place Matters and One Scotland, One Geography are likely to have a significant impact on future Local Authority IT services and systems.

Delivering Efficient Data Management: Local Authority Archaeological Liaison was funded by RCAHMS while the Polygonisation and The IT capabilities of the Scottish Sites and Monuments Records reports were funded by Historic Scotland and managed by RCAHMS and all three reports could not have been produced without the significant co-operation of Scotland?s local authority archaeologists.
