hm...interesting debate about unpaid, long-term interns. Graduate students are forced to take unpaid internships of between 3-6 months to be able to gain experience and hopefully be offered a job.
Thereby access to jobs is restricted or made harder for those who don't have Mum & Dad cover their expenses for the internship period.
Sounds familiar? Not just archaeology then...
Now the government watchdog is 'investigating'.

When working abroad I have seen the affect of this where only the children of the well of get the museum jobs et al after the rest can not not hang around for years doing un-paid work however good they might be.

Quite why this is 'news' to anyone in the Labour government or readers of the Guardian newspaper is beyond me. In times of economic stress the bourgeoisie will always revert to type and seek to protect its offspring.
Of course if the government 'watchdog' investigation concludes that we are all due a small outbreak of class war, whey hey!! Lets start building the barricades....}

Class war? Or a reflection of attitudes towards jobs which are considered to be done for the love, not the money (and therefore worth less in terms of financial input to the economy and not worthy of public funding)?

In times of stress, everyone protects their offspring. Are you seriously suggesting that the middle classes are conspiring to keep all the poorly paid jobs for themselves and their children? If so then you should rejoice, for in a generation or two the middle classes will be no more.[:o)]

There is nothing 'new' about this, either in archaeology or in a whole swathe of other professions. Nor does it necessarily exclude the less well off.
I and my wife (a biochemist) both did long periods of voluntary work before moving into very low-paid, insecure work in the early parts of our careers, without any parental subsidy. We did it mainly living on supplementary benefit (?23 a week in 1984, plus part of your rent paid, as far as I remember).
Benefit rules are much tighter now, though, and it is questionable whether an intern would be able to claim any benefit (because they would be deemed not to be available for paid work).
