You're forgetting uu and dd...[:o)] Body at work and mind on vacation TWO Words! - deepdigger - 13th May 2005 these bloody dam projects are always wrecking the archaeology somewhere, they do more damage than ggat. deep TWO Words! - Beardstroker - 13th May 2005 I actually turned down an offer of a job on this project. I'm still undecided if I did the right thing, even though I didn't have a lot of choice at the time. TWO Words! - gumbo - 13th May 2005 You did the right thing. Oxford should be ashamed of themselves. Did anyone ever hear of a pipeline in the Congo... G TWO Words! - troll - 14th May 2005 Absolutely- the archaeology is of course but one dimension. The displacement of the Kurds is another. For an insight into the Turkish treatment of the Kurds-have a look at the European newspaper (January 11-17th 1996). Of course, the problem is this- if we boycott a government and refuse to participate in the active recovery of threatened archaeology on moral/ethical grounds, we lose the archaeology. How do we approach this? What can be done on a global basis to counter this double-edged sword? For my part, I feel that the Turkish Government should be forced to deal with the archaeology themselves and European academics and indeed, commercial archaeologists should grow up and open their eyes. TWO Words! - deepdigger - 16th May 2005 The question i suppose is more like, how can we in the western world refuse another country a shot at civilisation just because of the archaeology. India for example has discovered massive coal reserves and fully intends to exploit it, but they intend building a whole series of 1960's style power stations. we all know the amount of environmental damage that these can do, but how can we say to india that they can't do it? after all we did, ok we have moved on from there but remember that a lot of the people living in these countries have no electric light in their homes and projects like this can redress this and more. deep TWO Words! - Tim - 9th June 2005 The French and Swiss archies digging on site thought they (OAU)were a bunch of lazy good for nothings just interested in getting boozed up and getting a tan. Tim TWO Words! - Steve Walsh - 9th June 2005 OAU slackers! - can you back that up - I have always been led to believe they were the model professional unit in the UK - certainly from my rather academic stnace they would appear to be that way A trowel is a thing to lust for! |
