Slightly worrying.... - Gemma - 22nd May 2005 Hey everyone, [:0] I have to say am excited but having small panic at what I have let myself in for during the summer... 4 weeks of excavation in wales (muchos rain and mud then) and a project surveying dinosaur footprints. I am completely green on the digging front so any advice would make my life in summer sooo much easier im thinking! cheers Slightly worrying.... - deepdigger - 23rd May 2005 Hello, where in Wales are you digging? deep Slightly worrying.... - Gemma - 23rd May 2005 Castell Henllys? Pembrokeshire. Slightly worrying.... - Oxbeast - 23rd May 2005 Have a look at the 'advice on kit for first time digger' thread on the 'starting out in archaology' page. Wish you all the best, Castell Henlys is lovely. try and get out on the coast path. But dinosaur footprints are not archaeology. If I had a quid for every time some local type asked me if I've found any dinosaurs, I wouldn't need all the gold coins I've also found... Slightly worrying.... - BAJR Host - 23rd May 2005 Played a great game with my YAC club this saturday... Digger or Dino.....?? You had to run about ... cheer or boo depending if you thought a piece of kit was for archaeologists or Dino hunters. superb... apart from one smart ass... only 8 years old mind! "I think you will find that the proper terminolgy is a Paleontologist and in fact the use of JCBs is not confined to archaeolgoical work"... "er...... er..... yeah... really good....." felt like crying and running away Slightly worrying.... - the invisible man - 23rd May 2005 I bet he's a MIFA already! Today, Bradford. Tomorrow, well, Bradford probably. Slightly worrying.... - Oxbeast - 23rd May 2005 I've heard tell of the Edinburgh YAC lot before as well. They say things like, 'I'll only keep archaeology as a hobby, as you can't make enough money doing it. I'm going to be an accountant instead'. 'Nuff said. Slightly worrying.... - the invisible man - 25th May 2005 Relax Gemma, you'll have a great time at Castell Henllys. I was there some years ago. No-one will shout at you or make you do anything you can't do, and you'll get to have a go at all sorts of things, and you'll be shown how to do them (none of them are difficult anyway!). As long as you're keen and do your best you'll be fine: if you have a go and mess it up, no-one minds, it's a training dig. Skiving off to the loo for two hours or kipping ina barrow tends to annoy though! The camp site is a good laugh, food is good - I watched the 98 World Cup Final in the marquee, on a portable on a stepladder. The director is a really nice bloke, who makes sure he knows everyone's name - a little thing that impressed me. The scenery is superb, there are coach trips to Pentre Ifan and similar stuff (one is up a bloody great hill be warned!). There used to be a local pro who comes in as 2nd in commend, he's really good and can teach you a lot. Forgotten his name though. It's a 40 minute walk to the pub though! Blimey, at this rate I'll be going back for another go myself...... Today, Bradford. Tomorrow, well, Bradford probably. Slightly worrying.... - Beki - 8th June 2005 my gosh...i dug at castel hennlys too! whey and yes..the pub is a long way away but the site is nice |
