17th century guns - eggbasket - 15th June 2005 I was at a health and safety training day last week and one of the trainers was a bit of a 17th century reenactor (not sure which bit ). He asked me about a find of a 17th century gun trail with some paint still surviving on it. Apparently, it was found at a fortified house somewhere in the west of England (possibly Cheshire) together with bits of leaded glass. I seem to recall it being mentioned on the radio as I was driving to work recently but cannot remember the details. Anyone know anything about this? I would be particularly interested in knowing what colour the paint was and what scheme, if any, was used. Cheers, Eggbasket There's nothing like a Dane ... 17th century guns - troll - 15th June 2005 Would question the term gun trail until I had seen it. Generally speaking, artillery of the 17th Century was painted black unless it was for ceremonial purposes and then, not particularly artistically. Would be worth the enquirer approaching the Sealed Knot and in particular-the artillery garden. On the leaded window front-check out the excavation reports for Basing House Hants (my regiments ancestral home).....Also-check out the Royal armories in Leeds/London. 17th century guns - eggbasket - 16th June 2005 Well, not knowing anything about the find, I am intrigued to know if one has been found with paint on it, and, if so, what colour(s) the paint was. WRT the Sealed Knot, the chap, who asked me, is an active member so I guess he should have access to that knowledge. I shall check out the Basing House reports. It is possible that this find is not generally in the public domain yet, as the enquirer seemed to think that it was a very recent find undertaken by a unit from Liverpool and I can find nothing about it on the net. Cheers, Eggbasket There's nothing like a Dane ... 17th century guns - deepdigger - 16th June 2005 A unit from liverpool? You'll be lucky if there's any paint left!! deep 17th century guns - troll - 16th June 2005 Visions of gun carriage on bricks wiv no wheels....... 17th century guns - deepdigger - 17th June 2005 Or the shafts missing and a horse looking for somewhere to stand!! deep 17th century guns - the invisible man - 17th June 2005 Hey, you guys are in severe danger of having to go and aplogise in person to the inhabitants of that city! Would you really like to have something in common with Boris Johnston? Today, Bradford. Tomorrow, well, Bradford probably. 17th century guns - troll - 17th June 2005 Ok, point taken. Liverpool, I am profoundly sorry for suggesting that your inhabitants are in any way dodgy, theivin, parasitic, vocally challenged or iffy in any way.Not. A desired bit of common ground wiv Boris (bless im) would be- to be the one who writes his death certificate..... A...A....A...A...A...CKKKALM DOWN!! 17th century guns - deepdigger - 18th June 2005 Yes sorry Liverpool, Whatwas i thinking of suggesting that the people are a bunch of crooks and bone idle scam artists, won't do that again. And as for Boris! I'd dig his grave(or any other Tory for that matter)!! deep 17th century guns - troll - 20th June 2005 How on earth did a thread on artillery come to this? On a "sort of" related point-how many of you can, hand on heart, tell the difference between prehistoric flint and say-17th Century gun flint?[?] |
