I can't take it any more...

what are peoples thoughts?

Is it a big Dig or a Bag of S##t?

Are you on a site...?

It it good, bad or totally Tony?[?]

Another day another WSI?

BIG DIG - deepdigger - 3rd July 2005

I'm not on it, nor would I if asked. I suggest that this is just sensationalising archaeology for the tv ratings, treasure hunting by a different name, I think!!

deep

BIG DIG - Ash - 4th July 2005

I only saw the one yesterday but I thought it was truly awful. Bad attempts at fake surprise (Charterhouse dig), trying to make two shreds of pottery really exciting, some bad presenting, what else can I say?? I don't think we learned anything new or exciting. As a piece of TV, it was dull to watch and as a piece of archaeology, it was even worse. The sites at Llandelio were potentially interesting but the time wasn't spent on them.

I despaired watching it yesterday, I really did. The experiments carried out might have been of more interest and value if they were properly conducted/carried out but the whole impression I got from the problem was one of hurriedness. Anyone else feel this way?

I have to confess that the sight of 2 tiny rim sherds on the table made me smile... er.... is that it.... er.... over to you.... er.... is this a disaster.... er.... no..... er Francis... you must be gutted.

I love the historian in the studio though... he is on a different plane! As to the storming of the hillfort by Legionnary Tim against a bloke in pyjamas! .... oh.... stop it!

I did feel for the people creating teh temporary fort though... which by the looks of it... was going to take around 3 days to complete... (ie... 3 days too late for a legion camp)

bring it on!Big Grin

Another day another WSI?

They clearly didn't learn many lessons from the last Big Dig, which was a complete disaster. They don't seem to have much DIY archaeology by the public this year though, which is an improvement. I'm all for community archaeology but not the brand done by those muppets with no resources to back up their promises.

On a related note, I'd like to see County Mounties who sell their souls (and their regions archaeology) to get on TV with Crime Team publicly flogged. Then again maybe the public humiliation is enough, because they never come across well on the show.

No they usually don't. And that might be because they've got little choice in being there, and they're cringing as much as we are when we're watching. Time Team have never done a show in my County (thank God), but when they were scouting out around here, there was absolutely nothing we could do about it because we have little or no influence on non-planning related work. These things always go down well with elected members too, who are good at applying pressure to line managers, so if they'd have done a show here the chances are I would've been forced to go on TV with them, and have looked just as bad.

I didn't watch any of this year's show. I'm still waiting for 20 - odd reports of last year's Big Dig. :face-confused:

BIG DIG - Mtgorry147 - 5th July 2005

I've refused to watch any of this years show given the general pantsness of the whole thing.

I agree with curator that line managers will force the issue of publicity for the sake of the elected officials and unfortunately the curators end up looking the fools.

However, I would raise one point that I know will get shot down in flames.

Do you not remember ten years ago going onto sites and nobody having a clue or interest in what you were doing. The amount of dogs abuse suffered at that time has slackened somewhat largely due to the influence of this effluent show. Now i know that the show has many faults, probably too many to mention, but it has raised awareness, especially amongst the digger driver community.

What I would say is that its probably had its day and should die gracefully (or maybe not so gracefully) but lets give it some small small bit of credit for raising the profile of our dejected community.

Just my thoguhts on the issue

To an extent I agree, but this has its downside too. I've just been on a site where builders were renovating a house next door. One afternoon, one of them started slagging us off loudly, because "Time Team dig up a whole f***ing field and put it all back in three f***ing days, and that girl's been working on the same f***ing drain all week" (for the record, none of us had been working on the same anything all week). People don't realise TT is to archaeology what Ground Force is to proper gardening. Sad

Body at work and mind on vacation

BIG DIG - Mtgorry147 - 5th July 2005

What? You mean ground force isn't real? Smile
