Who do you want to work for? - Reggie - 21st September 2005

All my experiences with YAT have been pretty positive but as it is the only unit I have worked for as yet, I am not really in a position to judge how it compares to others. I am not employed at YAT at the moment but I would like to be.

<RANT_MODE ON> C****t on a f***ing bike, can we please get back to the original topic! Everyone I have ever met in archaeology in the last 20 years can whinge for Britain on the subject of "who's the worst", myself included. Frankly I'm sick to death of hearing about it. I thought that we were supposed to be discussing what makes somewhere good to work. Surely someone must have some ideas in the subject otherwise we might as well all go and jump off a cliff. <RANT_MODE OFF>

Sorry about that.

Mercenary, if you want to name and shame then carry on by all means. however, I hope you've got a very good lawyer and lots of proof.

Yours depressedly

S Sad

I'll consider myself warned.

Who do you want to work for? - 1man1desk - 21st September 2005

Please, everyone, go and look again at the first (founding) post on this thread - we can all complain on other threads (and do), but the topic in this thread is explicitly supposed to be who is good to work for.

Thanks.... it is better to say who you like working for.... the ones who are not mentioned will be a clue to what people think...

Rightyho-seeing as dummies are being thrown-here`s my suggestion. If anyone out there has the wherewithall to help me set up a website, please contact me on my e-mail address. I agree with Mr Hosty-BAJR is his site and does make a difference in it`s own way-lets keep it that way. I am quite happy to host another site (with technical help) that will openly expose the dirt in archaeology that we can`t remove with a trowel. Is that acceptable to the subscribers? That way, the admirable and consistant achievements/endeavours of BAJR will continue un-molested. The suggested alternative site would solely be involved in the exposure of bad practise-nothing else. Here`s my rant...Sith, has it not occurred to you that the ranting has continued for 20 years because absolutely nothing has been changed by those with the ability to induce it? I and many other subscribers don`t relish spending our spare time on here risking our jobs going over the same old sh*t year after year just to receive deafening levels of silence and denial from those in positions of un-elected responsibility. The ranting will stop when certain individuals and "institutions" are forced to listen, then act.In your words-"sorry about that". There, a little venom escapes. Back to the thread then, who`s worth working for?.....................Big Grin

Who do you want to work for? - sniper - 21st September 2005

have said all I am going to say on the subject on here, and I'm sure I do enough whinging to others off forum. toby has said all that is necessary about YAT procedures and I confirm what he has said. I intend to stay put with them for as long as possible and I am probably about as secure in my job as I can be without a permanent contract, but then I am a loner specialist.

sorry if this is a bit rambling, but just wanted to say something a bit lighter. Last few posts have been a bit on the heated side

Who do you want to work for? - mercenary - 21st September 2005

Well, that's going to kill this thread then.

There are plenty of good units out there, but I can think of none that I could unreservedly say only good things about. This is the archaeological profession after all. Most of us wouldn't be writing if everything was rosy with no serious problems to solve.

It was fun while it lasted.

PS Good luck Troll on the site of bile. I'll be a frequent contributor. And if anyone out there can think of a single libel case caused by messageboard posts I'd really like to hear about it. Get real people.

Who do you want to work for? - sniper - 21st September 2005

agree with all that mercenary, and I could spout bile for ages on troll's messageboard, but this isn't it, and we are being asked to be nice, so I guess the thread is probably dead as we seem to be a load of old moaners Wink

Who do you want to work for? - Reggie - 21st September 2005

Re. Libel and the internet - it can and does happen !

There was quite a bit of publicity about this case at the time.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/story/0,3604,1444444,00.html

and this article mentions some other cases
http://www.maxpc.co.uk/features/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=17706&subsectionid=735&subsubsectionid=605

As someone just starting out I would be very interested to hear about good and bad units but at the end of the day some people may have different experiences to others in the same workplace. So its hard to tell if this sort of thread would ever work really well as a place of hard facts and accurate information, whether positive or negative, regardles of libel or whatever.

I know I enjoy working for YAT (friendly helpful staff and they give us newbies a chance to learn etc) but that doesn't mean I think the unit is the epitomy of a perfect employer.

If there is a perfect employer out there can someone let me into the secret ? Wink
