Urgent for Thornborough - archae_logical - 24th August 2005 Tarmac have put in an archaeological mitigation strategy for the Ladybridge planning application to NYCC which totally rubbishes EH's statement that the site is of national importance. They have included land donation and make it sound like they are doing a big favour by donating land to the nation. However this land is boundary land or land that has already been offered and rejected and is mostly not land on Ladybridge.[:0] Timewatch is once again asking people to write letters of objection to NYCC and Tony Blair as a matter of urgency - the deadline is 9th September. Please pass this message round to anyone you think will help. Urgent for Thornborough - troll - 27th August 2005 Mister Hosty?Doctor Pete? This is sounding a bit interesting and requires urgent attention methinks...anyone? Urgent for Thornborough - BAJR Host - 28th August 2005 Indeed.... though not unexpected. If information on.... a) Where the information on the Tarmac application can be viewed. b) Any reference to the the rubbishing of EH report, and I can then ask for a reaction from the report author c) a map showing area of offered land and also the land that Tarmac had decided not to quarry anyway. then I can put something together..... Tarmac are not in the business of giving away land that they could make money out of... rather throw a rotting fish to the public...and claim you are passing out caviar! Another day another WSI? Here's the link you asked for which I couldn't give before as it took time to put together http://www.timewatch.org/Pages/LadyMit1.htm This shows the relevant piece of land Tarmac will donate to the nation on the actual site of Ladybridge Farm. The rest of the land is land that has either previously been offered to the residents of Nosterfield and turned down (twice), Thornborough Moor where they are unlikely to get permission to quarry IMO, a small piece of land on the current quarry which has already been quarried and returned to pasture. The mitigation strategy can be viewed/obtained at the council offices at Northallerton. Urgent for Thornborough - BAJR Host - 29th August 2005 Lots of thanks.... and nice to talk with you! I am preparing a nice easy way to send comments to tony blair http://www.number-10.gov.uk/output/Page821.asp go there Choose Tourism and Heritage copy... and insert this..don't forget to put your name in! To: First Lord of the Treasury and Minister for the Civil Service the Rt Hon Tony Blair MP, 10 Downing Street, London, SW1A 2AA. From: ___________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ Date:____________ Re:Archaeology and landscape of the Thornborough Henges, North Yorkshire Dear Mr Blair, I am writing as a reaction to the current quarrying within what is known as the "ritual landscape" of the Thornborough Henges. As you will be aware, these ancient and venerable structures are part of an extensive archaeological landscape that is one of the most important of its kind in the British Isles. It is a place who's relative obscurity has allowed it to become prey to extensive quarrying. It is now realised that quarrying has removed significant amounts of archaeology directly related to the henges, much of this without suitable mitigation. However, The Thornborough Henges still include three of the best preserved henges in Britain, with the exception of the quarry, the surrounding landscape has not been subject to significant developments and monument complex is therefore important not only from an archaeological perspective but also with regards to future tourism. It is clear that the failure of the authorities and the public as a whole to realise Thornborough's importance at this late date means that the area lacks the level of protection it deserves, and I ask you to do all that is in your power to remedy this situation as soon as possible. Yours sincerely ______________________________ Another day another WSI? Urgent for Thornborough - deepdigger - 30th August 2005 Done sir!! deep Urgent for Thornborough - Alfie - 30th August 2005 Do we know who the applicants archaeologists are? Urgent for Thornborough - Curator Kid - 30th August 2005 I wouldn't mind having a look at the full version of the mitigation strategy. Is this accessible digitally anywhere? I looked on the NYCC and Tarmac websites, but couldn't find it, and there's no chance of me getting to the Council Offices to have a look. Urgent for Thornborough - BAJR Host - 30th August 2005 Yes we do... and yes I have.. email me and I can send you a copy of the mitigation. remember there are two sides to every story though... and mineral extraction has to happen somewhere. the debate is whether it has to happen here.. and IF (I stress IF) it does, what is the best deal that can be achieved to ensure both the long term survival and protection of the Henges (the henges are not under direct threat remember) and also how will teh landscape that is to be quarried be recorded so that a complete picture of this massive landscape is understood. info@bajr.org for copies of the mitigation Another day another WSI? Urgent for Thornborough - drpeterwardle - 30th August 2005 Every time a superlative is used about Thornborough you increase the chances that the same type of henge hinterland at Dorchester on Thames will be quarried. David please send me the mit strat. Peter |
