Office Waller - trowelhead - 11th October 2005 Good Day folks, Im thinking of making the move from Field Archaeology to (dont get cross now!) consultansy. Ive been doing archaeology for 6 years now and have now got family responsibilities blah, blah. Thing is Im not MIFA yet maybe a coupla more years and I will be there but at the mo Im AIFA. Do you need to be MIFA to be one of these high flying consultants or indeed do you have to be in the IFA at all to practise as a consultant. I have little time for the IFA as it seems to operate like John Cleese`s PFJ from the Life of Brian, lots of meetings but nothing ever happens. The move away from the feild is difficult one as I love that part of the job but responsibilities abound and I have to move on. Im up to speed on my PPG`s and cake buying responsibilities so I feel if im half way there and I feel with a goodly load of experience in the field at least i will now the onions and faces of the world of archaeology. Any comments gratefully recieved. [?] Office Waller - eggbasket - 11th October 2005 Fieldwork leads to Deskjob. Deskjob leads to Consultancy. And that way lies the dark side. } Cheers, Eggbasket Gentleman Adventurer and Periphrastic Sesquipedalian Preternatural eventuation is an amaranthine potentiality Office Waller - Cautionary Tale - 11th October 2005 I've just moved into consultancy after 10 years in the field. As far as my interviews were concerned, the possibility that I could be an MIFA was enough (ie had the experience/qualifications etc). Currently AIFA, to my shame never stated it in spite of the monthly subs. Office Waller - eggbasket - 11th October 2005 Actually, on a more serious note, I would not worry too much about your IFA membership level. Your field experience will stand you in good stead for part of the job, but you will also need a good knowledge of the process of archaeology in planning and will need to develop a knowledge of EIA, SEA, PPGs, etc. The other thing that you will need is an interest in desk-based research, otherwise you will probably fall by the way. I know that as you say its a move off to the dark side but I just cannot work away one day longer the marriage just wont stand the strain or my pocket. I leave the field with one fond hope that as a consultant I may inject into this part of the industry some knowledge of what all you fine people do every day. I certainly know that I will take into account the archaeologist who has just dug the fetures view on what they have been excavating, I will try and take into consideration the conditions we have all worked in an hopefully effect some change even if it is minimal from my position even if it is just cakes. You`ll know its me coz I will be carrying the red light saber. Office Waller - eggbasket - 11th October 2005 Quote:quote:Originally posted by trowelhead Just cakes? JUST cakes? There is no "just" about cakes. They are the ultimate sanction. When all else around you have let you down, there is always sweet reliable cake. So cake is not just cake. Cake is satori, nay, nirvana. We have much nicer cakes. And they're subsidised in the council canteen. Office Waller - 1man1desk - 11th October 2005 Hah. I laugh in the face of your pathetic curator cakes. Our dark-side cakes are better than any unionised public sector excuses for confectionery. Unfortunately, also usually subsidised by me. Everyone knows that the Dark side may be quicker, easier, and more seductive, but that the light side is more powerful. Yoda said so. "...If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will..." I'd rather consume a unionised public sector cake than be consumed by evil. |
