CBA, IFA and Britarch = people who generally think that archaeology is in a reasonable state of health and only minor change is needed.
BAJR = people who generally think that awful wages+contracts, poor health and safety, and unresolved issues at the heart of the profession mean that lots of change is needed.
If that is a fair characterisation (if...) then I know who I support

I am sure that there is a world of difference between the 'private views' of the CBA management and views expressed on the Britarch discussion list.
Even though the Britarch list is managed by the CBA is has the same relationship with it as BAJR Forum does to our Mr. Host. In other words the CBA is not responsible for the comments placed on there, any more than BAJR is responsible for mine or anyone elses comments placed here.
The Britarch list does seem to be populated by even wierder people than live here. Yes BAJR might have its share of left-wing loonies but they are quite harmless compared to some of the nutters on Britarch. That's why I am here and not there.
Incidentally I think the IFA and probably the CBA are aware of many of the concerns re wages, career structure etc. that are often raised on BAJR and do seem to be doing something about it, albeit slowly.
Don't be discouraged Mr Host, I am sure your behind the scenes discussions are not going to be de-railed by the comments of some list members (either on Britarch or on BAJR).

The thread about the Digger being a Marxist rag (which, to be fair, it more or less is) was started by Beer Beast, who wrote

Beer Beast seems to work for the Oxford unit. I am not sure what his source is but please see my earlier email re the distinction between the Britarch discussion list and the CBA. Possibly he is also a member of Britarch discussion list and had entered into discussion off-list with other list members 'over there'.
Perhaps he could enlighten us?

Howard Carter was always slagging off his treasure hunting American boss prior to being employed Lord Carnarvon.
I would say more archaeologists are "Marxist" not "Adam Smithist" as Marx has much more interesting things to say on exchange systems and supply and demand. We should remember he wrote "Das Kapital" after he visited Manchester (the most polluted city in the world at that time, also with the lowest live expectancy and chronic poverty) with Engels.
