Consultants wages - mercenary - 24th May 2006 Can anyone out there in the archaeological consultancy industry give me an idea what the market rate for entry level consultants is? I'm not talking entry level fresh out of uni, but entry level after attaining project officer level in commercial archaeology. For those out there that will rush to accuse me of hypocrisy after my consultant bashing past, I would like to stress that this is for a "friend". Consultants wages - BAJR Host - 24th May 2006 'Ere... I'm being a lovely cuddly consultant tommorrow... for £3.25 and a smile... but seriously... some recent adverts were as follows Consultant - £18,450 - £27,492 Consultant Archaeologist from £18,450-£20,235 Graduate Archaeological Consultant £17,500 so there you go... Another day another WSI? Consultants wages - mercenary - 24th May 2006 That's great. Thanks Consultants wages - vulpes - 24th May 2006 e's not called mercenary fer nothing. Consultants wages - mercenary - 24th May 2006 Too right. We want wages to go up we have to bloody well demand them.} This time it's not for me though. Honest.[8D] Consultants wages - drpeterwardle - 25th May 2006 I would suggest that the salary should be £18,450-£20,235 that is the BAJR grade 5 for an entry level consultant project officer or put another way below the national average wage. Other factors have to be taken into account such as the hours worked, private health insurance and the pension scheme. The mileage allowance is important - or if you get a company car the former will add to the income the later will cost money. This is to be compared to an Inspector of Ancient Monuments whose salary is 25-31k or an academic post at 28-40k. (David I have just noticed that a field officers job is being advertised at a grade 4 level not a grade 5) If you "friend" is wondering what to ask a consultancy by way of a salary the key is the charge out rate. The pay should be about a third of this. Peter Wardle Consultants wages - BAJR Host - 25th May 2006 well spotted Peter... slip of my tick box! Another day another WSI? Consultants wages - drpeterwardle - 25th May 2006 To clarify slightly the salary should be a third of the charge out rate for 25 hours per week. Another thing to look out for is how many charged out hours per week have to be worked. Peter Wardle Consultants wages - Real Job - 25th May 2006 Taking Peter's 'third of the charge out rate' as a rule of thumb, I wonder: a) Whether a third of the day rate is a fair equivalent for field units? b) How many field units pay a third of their day rate to their staff? i.e. are we being exploited by units, or do we sell ourselves too cheap as an industry - or both... Consultants wages - drpeterwardle - 25th May 2006 The overheads for consultants are very different to field staff and so is the amount of none chargeable time. The figures given are from the book "The perfect consultant". Peter Wardle |
