When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - BAJR Host - 10th November 2009 Yes.. its possible ... you can enjoy archaeology. So How long has it been for you in the UK? (sites abroad don't count!) When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - juliewren - 10th November 2009 HEY!!!! How about right now? What makes you think we're not enjoying our jobs now? I'm having a great time working on a water pipeline in a beautiful place. No archaeology has turned up of any great age, but I'm still enjoying myself. This summer I supervised a field school dig on a Roman octagonal bath house in Kent. Absolute heaven. Wonderful archaeology, wonderful people, beautiful location and weather. Who says British archaeology is crap? When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - Mattymooface - 10th November 2009 Apart form the weather,(upland excavtion in winter) i an enjoying it right know When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - lucy78green - 10th November 2009 3 years ago I would vote When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - salmonpuff - 10th November 2009 right now When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - GnomeKing - 10th November 2009 i enjoyed it when there was mutal respect, a shared sense of purpose, people working together using thier different abilities and experience, real team work, shallow pay scales...those golden moments still seem to make the rest worthwhile. strangely the quality of the archaeology seems in retrospect somehow irrelevant, in that the least enjoyable times were when the archaeology was good, but some or all of the above elements were defective. Ah, Gnome King, I remember those days, sadly long gone. When you could actually go home at night and know that you'd done your job properly. Unfortunately that is not what happens now. Deadlines need to be met, clients need to be satisfied and we have to prostitute our professional ideals because of the system we work within. I don't know whether you're a field worker or not but the main raison d'etre for our existance is to provide the lard arsed office workers with employment per annum. Post-ex is king. When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - GnomeKing - 11th November 2009 viva la republic! in that case perhapes should be more like the Fisher King? blood (or lard) returned to earth every year for the good of the people? seriously - They need skilled field workers, but They dont like finding out about the limits of thier own knowledge...many dont pull thier weight, some are just plain ignorant - They need to be culled... When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - BAJR Host - 11th November 2009 It was last week infact... a nice gentle survey of a Kirk and surrounding 18th century Landscape for a community Group. - You know... it suddenly dawns on me that I Community Groups = Enjoyment and Archaeology Commercial = Misery and Mitigation hmmmm are they connected When was the last time you enjoyed an Excavation - Austin Ainsworth - 11th November 2009 Last week - finished a community excavation in Gloucester on the archaeology of a 19th century pub. Have to agree with Dave, I get more enjoyment from community work than I ever got from the commercial side. |
