HEY!!!! How about right now? What makes you think we're not enjoying our jobs now? I'm having a great time working on a water pipeline in a beautiful place. No archaeology has turned up of any great age, but I'm still enjoying myself. This summer I supervised a field school dig on a Roman octagonal bath house in Kent. Absolute heaven. Wonderful archaeology, wonderful people, beautiful location and weather. Who says British archaeology is crap?

i enjoyed it when there was mutal respect, a shared sense of purpose, people working together using thier different abilities and experience, real team work, shallow pay scales...those golden moments still seem to make the rest worthwhile.
strangely the quality of the archaeology seems in retrospect somehow irrelevant, in that the least enjoyable times were when the archaeology was good, but some or all of the above elements were defective.

Ah, Gnome King, I remember those days, sadly long gone. When you could actually go home at night and know that you'd done your job properly. Unfortunately that is not what happens now. Deadlines need to be met, clients need to be satisfied and we have to prostitute our professional ideals because of the system we work within. I don't know whether you're a field worker or not but the main raison d'etre for our existance is to provide the lard arsed office workers with employment per annum. Post-ex is king.

seriously - They need skilled field workers, but They dont like finding out about the limits of thier own knowledge...many dont pull thier weight, some are just plain ignorant - They need to be culled...

Last week - finished a community excavation in Gloucester on the archaeology of a 19th century pub.
Have to agree with Dave, I get more enjoyment from community work than I ever got from the commercial side.
