Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - Flavio - 13th January 2010 Hiya! at least Ive decided to write on this forum. well, Im considering some good options for my postgrad course (2010-11) but never tot about Birmingham. Im an italian degreed roman archaeologist and, for now, Id like to go to Leicester because I think It may be the best chance for me(and Ill be Mattingly's soles of shoes lol). Im very confused about it, could someone help me? Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - BAJR Host - 13th January 2010 Well... to help you... we will need to know more about What you want to do... in archaeology Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - Flavio - 13th January 2010 BAJR Host Wrote:Well... to help you... we will need to know more aboutwell Im writing my dissertation on Irish roman finds, but had some experience on roman topoghrapy in Britain(thats why I love so much Mattingly lol). So I would choose a MA about Roman Topoghraphy and Archaeology. I joined some excavations in Italy (roman and medieval digs) and know very well latin and a bit of greek. I would continue on the road of Roman archaeology, especially Urban archaeology (I love Wacher and Frere's studies on Roman Britain). Ive read all the exams for the British MA's but I dont like a lot of them (I know you are famous for the metholodical approach but Its a bit boring for me ) . Im actually considering Leicester and Belfast as well. The first one seems perfect for the subjects I like (especially the MA: "Rome and its neighbours"), and the other one I really love the city great doubts Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - BAJR Host - 13th January 2010 Right... I will move this to another thread... (as it is about Birmingham... I don't want to upset them... And I will ask the great BAJRites.... if you wanted to do Rman... where would it be.?? Of course I am biased and would suggest Glasgow... with Prof HAnson.. and a look at Aerial imagery ... plus you get the Antonine Wall and closer linking to Hibernia... just my thoughts... Have you looked at the BAJR Database of courses? http://www.bajr.org/BAJREducation/coursefinder.asp Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - BAJR Host - 14th January 2010 Anyone have any comments? Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - Flavio - 20th January 2010 yeah Ive considered Glasgow time ago. Its seems a very good one, and If Im not wrong, Scottish governement offers a lot of grants etc I should decide as soon as possible, I think. Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - BAJR Host - 20th January 2010 Better sooner than later Need advice about MA in Roman Studies - Bronze Elephant - 21st January 2010 I feel I ought to add my two cents worth here, having taken the Rome and It's Neighbours course at leicester a couple of years ago! I would start by saying that it is a very interesting course, and David Mattingly is rightly considered one of the experts in the field. However, assuming you've already heard all the positive points, I would warn you that (in my opinion) the actual archaeological side of things can be a little weak. Some of the other lectureres are very much of the ancient history school, and as an archaeologist, I found this quite limiting. That said the course is very flexible, and if you already have an idea about what you want to do, I'd deffinately recomend looking into it! |
