workin abroad - pitsection - 14th September 2006 hello, wonder if anyone can offer advice: i am thinkin of movin to france but don't really want ot give up in the archaeological career, so am wonderin if anyone knows how the system works out there. is it the same as here, ie polluter pays, private units or is it council units etc. i a at proj officer level and learnin the language to a good standard is not a problem (though i'm a long way from fluent!!) anyone with any experience of workin in france, or for that matter spain and italy??? (i'm not picky as long as it's hotter than here!) workin abroad - 1man1desk - 14th September 2006 I believe it is a hybrid system, with a central state organisation (INRAP) responsible for evaluations etc., but commercial units to do the mitigation work (or is it the other way round? not sure). Look up INRAP on Google. 1man1desk to let, fully furnished workin abroad - Tim - 20th September 2006 IRAP can be found at http://www.inrap.fr/site/en/page.php?id=434&p=Accueil&r= It's list of regional offices can be found at http://www.inrap.fr/site/en/page.php?id=64&p=directory Speaking French is almost compulsory. There are already too many archaeologists and not enough work in France. "Freedom of ideas is one thing, freedom of the purse is quite another". Edward Harris workin abroad - yak - 16th October 2006 Might be worth getting in touch with the local DRAC (direction regional des affaires culturelles). They oversee archaeology in each region and I guess they would have info on any commercial units about. Website is: http://www.culture.gouv.fr/culture/regions/index.html I think evaluations are carried out by INRAP and paid for by a tax levied on every development over a certain size, excavations are put open to tender but in reality most are also done by INRAP because there are few commercial units about. workin abroad - Tim - 16th October 2006 Don't forget the "Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique", CNRS They carry out a lot of archaeological work both in France and abroad. You'll need a Phd to run a project but they always need field staff.
