Michael Foot was also a formidable scholar particularly on the life and works of Jonathan Swift. I recall some bloated shires Tory standing up in Parliament and accusing Foot and the then Labour party of pursuing 'Lilliputian' policies only for Foot to remind him that he had written a definitive study of 'Gullivers Travels' and could do without someone whose reading probably extended little further than the Daily Express lecturing Foot on the meaning of the word 'Lilliputian'. Foot's passing ends a generation of politicians who were both committed and literate....we see very few examples in either main party at present...

meaning what, exactly, Unit? M Foot went to Quaker founded school....transcended the bounds of 'party politics' and contributed more to the plight of the down-trodden and dis possessed everywhere....when you've done a tenth of what he has, maybe you have a right to make snipey comments about a dead man [hero, in my opinion]....

I once saw him walking through the town of Lampeter, prior to Blair getting elected. Even though he was quite elderly he still had a certain presence (which by the very fact I mention it means it had some kind of impact), and a obvious ability to communicate with the ordinary member of the public from what I observed. Maybe I'm getting old and nostalgic but they don't make politicians like him anymore.
