Copyright for DBAs - thundercat - 18th June 2010 Dear all, Please can I ask some advice, as I am interested in setting myself up as sole trader for DBAs, and I would like some advice on copyright issues. I am aware that any maps produced in the last 50 years, are subject to a copyright license purchased from the Ordnance Survey. However, I believe that Crown Copyright to maps, plans and texts, older than 50 years held in Record Offices are subject to a waiver (see http://www.opsi.gov.uk/advice/crown-copyright/copyright-guidance/copyright-in-public-records). For papraphrsing and quoting texts etc that are from published sources, I believe you have to contact the publishers and request permission and / or obtain a license from a body like the Copyright Licensing Agency.http://www.cla.co.uk/. I have also taken out a Click-Use PSI Licence from the Office of Public Sector Information, in order to re-produce some Crown Copyright Information. Could someone please tell me, if I require anything else, or am doing this completely wrong. Thank you all your time. Best wishes. Copyright for DBAs - gonetopot - 23rd June 2010 You do indeed appear correct. An OS licence in these things is a must, although in all the DBAs I've completed I've never had any other license asked for or checked... only endless checks of library/record office/visitor cards. Most other sources can be quoted with a simple reference, although reproduction of images may require copywright permission, but in my experience this rarely comes up. On a less official basis it always helps to have an official looking business card with your name and company on it to hand to anybody who asks about who you are and what you are doing when conducting a site walk over or photographic survey. Especially if your site is anywhere near a school (I thought I was going to get chased with pitchforks... and I had ID and permission to be there). Best of luck with your company. Wearing an official-looking (and clean!) yellow vest at all times seems to avoid most of those tricky conversations anyway - people just assume you're from the council. From long experience it seems to reduce those interactions with interested/nosey/irate locals by around 90% although it can result in wierd complaints about bin collections etc. Copyright for DBAs - Jack - 24th June 2010 ....dont forget the clipboard! Copyright for DBAs - vulpes - 26th June 2010 Where's Unit of1 when ya need him? Copyright for DBAs - Unitof1 - 28th June 2010 What do you need me for? To take the pee out of the concept: 1 of a sole trader for dbas 2 dbas 3 dbas rather than ?inexpensive evaluations 4 the ifa standards on report writing that result in the necessity of os copyright location information. Quite like the idea of the Copyright Licensing Agency.http://www.cla.co.uk/. Has anybody used it. There seem to be some obscure archaeological societies listed, do they make anything out of it and how much?
