Organization's Background:
The Rozana is a Birzeit-based association established in 2007 by a group of people representing the owners of the old town houses, attics and courtyards of Birzeit town.
Rozana's founding board includes one seat for the Birzeit society which represents the Birzeit community in the Diaspora. It became officially registered by the Palestinian Ministry of Interior with registration no: 'RA-22539-RU' on 12 February 2008.
Rozana's scope of work revolves around Birzeit as a centre for rural-development activities and as a leading example for others to follow in terms of understanding the competencies of their villages and the ways to incorporate them into efficient and effective productive efforts. Its vision includes the preservation and protection of architectural heritage remaining as well as other available resources as basis for community and economic development.
Rozana?s mission is to network among these resources and others in order to realize its vision of a bustling historic centre in Birzeit, a centre that is linked with its neighbouring villages and the countryside in order to occupy a unique competitive position on the future tourism map of Palestine.
Project Summary[FONT="]:[/FONT][FONT="][/FONT]
Rozana Association is planning to organize a pilot coed summer camp for young rural youth ages 14-16 years. The main emphasis of the summer camp is to promote the importance of archaeological sites in Palestine. The summer camp will be one step forward in Rozana?s pursue to promote Palestine's cultural heritage map as an important element for the future development of local rural communities based on its available resources and capacities.
The summer camp will be an interactive opportunity for Rozana Association and its partners, on the forefront the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities in addition to Birzeit University, to create awareness among rural youth and to instil leadership skills in the field of archaeology.
This generation possesses the potential drive and capacity to assist in preserving, respecting and investing in the available cultural and historic heritage for future community development.
Short summary of project's area of implementation:[FONT="][/FONT]
Birzeit town was founded during the Bronze Age. It is close to Ramallah city and is an important gateway to the northern cities and villages. It is a cohesive part of the Christian belt of towns north of Ramallah. Birzeities have always brought sustainable and magnificent projects such as the Birzeit University. They are known to be welcoming, hospitable and liberal. Both Christians and Muslims in Birzeit live side by side in advanced harmony. There is a large Catholic church, several schools and both an Orthodox and a Protestant churches. The Birzeit municipality is lead by a progressive mayor and council members who are dedicated to its development. Various layers of history and monuments are abundant in and around Birzeit which opens the door for all kinds of tour initiatives such as the course of Khans and Sufism, the path of Ibrahim al-Khalil, the village path from Taybeh to Birzeit, and many other hiking events that explore the diverse landscape of the area and the various harvest seasons that take place throughout the year. Cultural heritage and exchange activities have been adopted and advanced where the Birzeit Heritage Week has played an important role in fostering such an invaluable resource.
Project Justification[FONT="]:[/FONT][FONT="][/FONT]
- Palestine is known for its rich archaeological stocks as many nations and ruling powers passed through its lands and have left behind important historic and religious sites. Today, these sites are important for the development of the tourism industry as well as the preservation of the country?s cultural and historic heritage.
- Therefore, it is necessary to create awareness over the availability of such diverse history and the importance and abundance of archaeological sites.
- It is also important to create future leaders in this field to connect the development of the society with its available resources.
- Archaeology is not only important for historical awareness but also in relation to the roots of community development to connect people not only to a solid past but also to a hopeful future of prosperity.
- The young archaeologist of Palestine is a pilot activity that answers to the development plan of the historic area of Birzeit which came to fruition as a result of an ongoing cooperation between the Rozana Association, Birzeit University, Birzeit Municipality and Riwaq.
- 15 youngsters will be involved in a set of activities such as archaeological digs of the mosaic floor in Khirbet Birzeit organized by the archaeological institute of Birzeit University. Other activities will include the discovery of the shrines, historic sites and landscape mainly, in and around the area of Birzeit. Other activities would target their leadership skills as well as their recreation
Beneficiaries:
The camp will carefully choose 15 motivated girls and boys ages 14 ? 16 years from Birzeit area and its surrounding, Sebastia area and Aqabet Jaber refugee camp in Jericho
Expected outcome/deliverables
- 15 coed future leaders will be trained as young explorers. Training will include:
ii. Organize an exhibition of archaeological findings at the end of the camp
- Awareness among rural youth will be created over the availability of Palestine?s diverse history and the importance and abundance of archaeological sites
- Leadership skills will be instilled among the 15 young explorers on means to connect the development of their society with its available resources
- Rozana Association will foster its network and partnerships with several local partners such as Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and Birzeit University.
Sustainability:
This project is connected to the rehabilitation of the Mamlouk house in the historical area of Birzeit which is designed to become an archaeological house. It will have on display a number of archaeological artefacts discovered from the vicinity of Birzeit in addition to leading and organizing a number of activities that promotes the conservation of archaeological sites and its importance for the future of Palestine. This is particularly important as it is incorporated into the economic development in general and the tourism development in specific.
Moreover, the attraction of international and local tourism to the created paths and trails will create sustainable income for further trainings and summer camps for more youngsters interested in this track of education.

None of the summer camps or initiated archaeological activities has ever targeted youngsters in their programs. Nevertheless, Rozana intends to conduct this pilot activity with the following organizations who had previous similar activities in archaeology (and their main roles):
a. Birzeit University, Institute of Archaeology: Organize the dig, provide supervision and guidance.
b. Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities: provide materials and information about sites
c. Sebastia Municipality and its cultural Centre, coordinate participants from Sebastia area and receive the youngsters when visiting their archaeological site
d. Jericho tourism board through its mosaic centre
e. Siraj Centre for Holy Land Studies in Beit Sahour: coordinate international volunteer's participation, provide logistic support and organize tours
Palestine Wild Life Society (in Beit Sahour): provide information, lectures and educational materials
