Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - BAJR - 20th May 2011 If you?ve missed any previous issues they are available to download on the newsletter page (http://www.archaeologists.net/groups/diggers/newsletter). If you are a member... and if not WHY NOT!!! Then issue 6 should be in your inbox right now. Good article by Chiz... an honest appraisal of my paultry but welcome 2% this year. On the other hand, without BAJR there would have been no rises for a couple of years now. So... JOIN up and read on. http://www.archaeologists.net/groups/diggers :face-approve: Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - chiz - 21st May 2011 Thanks David, as you say, 2% is far better than nothing! This issue has lots of information on training and courses, plus all the usual news and campaigns. There's our initial DF response to the Southport Group draft report as well -please get us your comments on this asap so we can include your views in our final response which has to be submitted in just over a week! We will be getting a selected 'sampler' of Issue 6 up on the DF webpage as soon as we get a moment, plus a pdf of our initial response to Southport so everyone can read it. Many thanks to everyone who contributed, Chiz The Diggers’ Forum (DF) is committed to creating a positive, sustainable and financially viable career for all professional archaeologists at all points in their career. The DF is a Special Interest Group of the Institute for Archaeologists representing all archaeologists working out on site at whatever grade. Membership of the DF is open to all. Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - chiz - 23rd May 2011 The text of the initial Diggers' Forum response to the Southport Group draft report is now up on the webpage here. We will be submitting a full response with detailed recommendations to the Southport Group, but we do need your comments if you are to be truly represented. There is a 'sampler' of a few pages of the current Forum Dispatch Issue 6 here. This includes an article on how the IfA validates field staff and what can be done to improve recognition of field skills, as well as part of an overview of training in archaeology. And a full e-copy of the winter Issue 5 is available here. Old issues are archived to the webpage as each new issue comes out. Chiz Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - moreno - 23rd May 2011 Re: Initial Diggers' Forum response The response includes concerns raised elswhere in various threads. This is an encouraging parallel, particularly regarding decisions made in isolation, where it appears there is a propensity for the lack of conference with fellow professionals (regardless of their status within the profession) on a best way forward. The response rightly raises certain issues regarding "top down" decision making and provides an opportunity to engage in lateral thinking. I look forward to submitting further comments before the May 30th deadline. Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - kevin wooldridge - 24th May 2011 Excellent work Chiz..... Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - Comarch - 24th May 2011 BAJR Wrote:If you?ve missed any previous issues they are available to download on the newsletter page (http://www.archaeologists.net/groups/diggers/newsletter). Great chance to begin a constructive dialogue in the profession via DF on the Southport report. This Con-Dem government will force local councils to devestate our public heritage service, with consequent knock-on to the commercial sector, and we need community support more than ever. Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - BAJR - 24th May 2011 Given that it is better to have one voice rather than 20... I would be more than happy for the comments in teh BAJR thread to be accepted as input to the Diggers Forum for them to add to their response. Would people agree? Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - sadie - 31st May 2011 Our response is being collated now and although we can't incorporate everything on here, rest assured that there are a lot of parallels so much of what's on here will be included, just not formally quoted. I think that the more people who reply the merrier- in fact if they receive 20 responses along the same lines then maybe it will carry more weight than just one? I would encourage people to respond, even if it's just a one-liner about a particular aspect of the SG document. If you don't shout nobody will hear you. And don't expect David to do all the work either! Latest Diggers Forum Newsletter - moreno - 31st May 2011 If there is a need for assistance (forum or PM), I'm only too happy to help. My telepathy is on the fritz, so if someone were to ask.... I feel it's fair to point out that a more coherent response to the Dig Forum (DF) request for input on the Southport Consultation (SC) wouldn't have gone amiss. It appears that BAJR and many BAJRites support the intent of the DF in so far as the SC is concerned. It shouldn't fall on the usual suspects to stump up for the "to do" work such as sorting through, collating and incorporating related thread responses. Browsing the various threads, it is evident how wide ranging the content relating to the Southport Consultation really is; the time required to collate this material is considerable. Is it really fair for "us" to rely on a few people to steer the change that is coming? It is coming whether one likes it or not. Personally, my take on the situation is that it is better to be a prudent and considered contributor (squeaky wheel as Sadie pointed out) rather than relying on the crass and pithy to get a thought across on a fairly important issue. Ok...that's my 2p worth. |
