5 years time..... - kevin wooldridge - 5th July 2011 Branching off from the thread 'General Rant'..... If you were to look forward and imagine 5 years or 10 years from now what advice would you give someone who wanted to work in archaeology at that date?. Just some suggestions:
(I am presuming that some basics driving licence, CSCS card or something similar are a given so we dont need to go over those points again) 5 years time..... - RedEarth - 5th July 2011 Be enthusiastic, get a degree, work hard, get some relevant experience. Not necessarily in that order. 5 years time..... - Jack - 5th July 2011 Yep enthusiasm and hard work are important for digging. Once your on site become a sponge.........and soak in all the available information, skills from those around you. Take any opportunity to do something new, be the stick monkey, watch those machines, take any responsibility offered. But thats just digging. Archaeology is a whole web of careers................. Choose, but choose wisely. 5 years time..... - kevin wooldridge - 5th July 2011 Sometimes I think the devil must read this website.....I have just found out in the past 10 minutes that the MA course I had been offered a place on from October at a reasonably well known UK university has been cancelled. I am guessing this is the first of many such announcements......now where was we 'Advice to future diggers'...... 5 years time..... - P Prentice - 5th July 2011 why not take this a logical step further and ask present diggers (employed or otherwise): where do you see yourself in 5 years? what will you do to get there? will you be assisted or hindered by the prevailing orthodoxy? 5 years time..... - Wax - 5th July 2011 I was trying to think positively but I truly believe that If we do not shake off the ConDems and pull the country out of the looming economic collapse there will not be a viable path for a long term career in archaeology in three years let alone five or ten. universities are cutting back on humanities courses & and Bunnygate shows us the route the ConDems want to follow. I will now go away and take some more happy pills and try think positively about my profession. I know where I want to be but in truth I can no longer think even six months ahead:face-crying: 5 years time..... - kevin wooldridge - 5th July 2011 P Prentice Wrote:why not take this a logical step further and ask present diggers (employed or otherwise): Sounds reasonable. Add all those questions to the original list as well then..... 5 years time..... - Marcus Brody - 5th July 2011 Well, I'm going to win the Euromillions tonight, so in five years time I'll probably be dead from a surfeit of lampreys (or, more likely, an overdose of stella) 5 years time..... - edwardajames - 5th July 2011 Stella?! Call yourself an archaeologist? heh 5 years time..... - Marcus Brody - 5th July 2011 I was going to say Tennent's, but I didn't want to be too sterotypically Scottish |
