IFA Statement of Support - BAJR Host - 15th January 2007 David It was useful to speak earlier today confirming our strategy for pay. It is very encouraging to know that BAJR is proposing this package of pay and conditions as an interim measure pending the benchmarking exercise that will establish what archaeological salaries should be. The IFA finds pressures of this sort from BAJR and others extremely useful if they encourage employers to exceed the IFA minima, and especially welcome if they help to pave the way for the significant pay increases the benchmarks will almost certainly require. Cheers Pete "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.." Khufu IFA Statement of Support - Illuminated - 15th January 2007 That's not such great news unless the IFA agrees to actually implement these bench mark figures. This is just another waste of IFA subscriptions on 'a here's what you might have won...' exercise. It's no use 'establishing what archaeological salaries should be' without taking the step of using that data in setting IFA minimums. It will be a very difficult task to compare any other trades or professions to archaeology, but my tuppenny worth guess would be a figure of around £18.5k for a basic G2 wage - somewhat comparable with the pay of a 16 year old standing round on a building site or a junior academic research assistant. (By the way IFA, you can have that estimate for free and save yourself some consultancy fees). How about it Mr Host, £18.5k minimum for G2 in 2008/2009? IFA Statement of Support - troll - 15th January 2007 A "benchmarking" exercise was undertaken recently by a UK university that has its own archaeological contracting unit/service.The results were, well, pointless to be honest. No consistancy across the board and any rises certainly did not justify the term "significant" by any yardstick. In short-if the IFA must provide "minima"-all it has to do is change it.Go on....Do something to stem the tide of experienced archaeologists migrating to grown-up jobs in disgust. You never know, we might actually believe that the IFA values archaeology. ..knowledge without action is insanity and action without knowledge is vanity..(imam ghazali,ayyuhal-walad) |
