IFA Conference - it's how much?! - stripeykelly - 17th January 2007 Dear all, I have just recieved the session programme and application form for the IFA conference 2007, and was aghast at the price. £130 pounds for the three days, not including the conference meal or accommodation (or transport). By my rough calculations it would cost me well over £200 to go to the event - even Glastonbury is cheaper!! How on earth do they expect field archaeologists, even up to P.O. level, to afford this? The conference is meant to be for field archaeologists, but few can afford to go. Is this a cunning way to keep pissed off and whinging diggers out of the conference, so the higher echelons can keep on pretending that all is fine and dandy?!:face-confused: Although one loophole I may have noticed, that you have to be an IFA member to pay the £130, and as most field archaeologists are not MIFA, perhaps we don't need to pay the full whack after all?! Any thoughts? Or am I being unreasonable? the future's bright; the future's trowel shaped IFA Conference - it's how much?! - kevin wooldridge - 17th January 2007 I remember a few years back the IFA advertising a reduction in fees for hard-up members (by 'member'the IFA means any grade of corporate membership, PIFA through to MIFA). I think that the reduction covers your conference fee, although if you want to stay in Reading's marbled halls, you still have to pay the accomodation. Worth enquiring before the fund gets exhausted by all those retired professor types. IFA Conference - it's how much?! - BAJR Host - 17th January 2007 The IFAâs 25th anniversary conference is taking place at the University of Reading on 2 â 4 April, 2007. Bursaries are available to members of the IFA and/or the IFA Diggersâ Forum* in order to provide financial assistance towards the costs of attendance for those who would otherwise be unable to participate. Awards typically include the payment of registration fees for attendance on one or more days and a contribution towards travel expenses. The provision of bursaries and the nature and extent of assistance in any given case is in the discretion of the IFA and is dependent upon other demands upon the Bursary Fund. Applications for bursaries should be made in writing to Alex Llewellyn, The Institute of Field Archaeologists, SHES, The University of Reading, Whiteknights, PO Box 227, Reading, RG6 6AB (alex.llewellyn@archaeologists.net 0118 378 6446) and should identify the grounds for the application. Further information about the IFA conference can be found at http://www.archaeologists.net/modules/icontent/index.php?page=18 * availability for non-IFA members is limited "No job worth doing was ever done on time or under budget.."
