Network Archaeology and the Boston Big Dig - BAJR - 2nd January 2012 http://www.pasthorizonspr.com/index.php/archives/01/2012/boston-big-dig In late July and early August 2011, a team of almost one hundred enthusiastic volunteers from Boston in Lincolnshire got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to excavate within the town?s historic market place. The aim was not only to investigate what was buried beneath the market place but to involve the residents of Boston in discovering the history of their town and to give them a sense of community and ownership of their past. The refurbishment of the market place provided the opportunity, with the market stalls temporarily relocated and the area closed to cars. In the midst of shoppers still using the surrounding shops, four 40m2 trenches were excavated, the archaeological works instantly becoming part of the busy day-to-day scene in the centre of Boston. People would pop by regularly, between trips to the bank, the chemist or the hairdresser to get updates of new discoveries.
