Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust wanting Vollys - BAJR - 27th April 2012 Volunteers needed Recruitment is now in progress for the Access to Archaeology volunteer project. The Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust are currently looking for volunteers for our new Access to Archaeology project (A2A). This scheme aims to enhance the Historic Environment Record with information held within the pages of grey literature reports held within the HER. The results of the work you carry out will be made available to all on the Archwilio website (www.archwilio.org.uk), helping to improve access and facilitate the role of archaeological planning and wider research in the archaeology of Southeast Wales.
If you, or anyone you know may be interested in this project just download a volunteer pack here or visit the Access to Archaeology site. If your interested you could also help us to promote the project and information leaflets can be downloaded from the A2A site (if you would like us to send you printed copies then please contact us at her@ggat.org.uk ). I am remaining neutral on this - so don't want a grumphl response... I can see how it can do things that would not be possible otherwise. Quote:Does this also mean that the HER will volunteer data free to a contractor who produced the grey lit in the first place though Anyway... if you know people who want to get involved... or learn about data systems Access to Archaeology project Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust wanting Vollys - Unitof1 - 27th April 2012 Bugger me, They got VATed, at last I dont believe it I tried to complain to the VAT man years ago and then there was the North Pennines archaeology something to do with VAT and now read this -is this the first?!!! The mind boggles. Has this been reported elsewhere? http://www.charity-commission.gov.uk/Accounts/Ends09/0000505609_ac_20110331_e_c.pdf Quote: does that mean they are going to try and get their old clients to pay up? and good luck with this Quote:PENSION COMMITMENTS Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust wanting Vollys - Unitof1 - 27th April 2012 when you look at wessex and oxford accounts i find it difficult to work out if they collect VAT. You get this statement in both accounts Quote:Invoices raised in advance of the provision of services are included within current liabilities; deferred income. Charitable trading income, No other mention of VAT Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust wanting Vollys - Dinosaur - 27th April 2012 Is VOLLYS posh modern-speak for the good old vol? I actually think that this is not a bad idea - sure, in an ideal world, the HER would be properly-resourced, and would have enough staff to fully enter everything in the grey literature reports into the database (I know that in Unit's ideal world, there'd be no HERs, but I don't want to revisit that whole argument yet again). However, given that this is unlikely to happen any time soon, I don't really have a problem with them using volunteers to do something that wouldn't otherwise be done - after all, it's not taking a job away from an archaeologist, as they don't have the money to employ someone to do this work (and again, I know that Unit doesn't consider Council archaeologists to be archaeologists, so I don't want to revisit that whole tedious rant either). Surely it's better that the information in the grey literature report is as widely and easily available as possible, rather than being locked up in a paper copy of a report in a filing cabinet in a Council office? I'm sure most people have experienced the frustration of looking at the online HER and seeing that a survey has taken place, but that there's no detail of the results because it's never been fully entered into the record, meaning you have to ask the staff for a scan or photocopy, which in turn usually results in a charge. Similarly, if I've done a survey that's identified 50 new sites, I'd prefer that information on these is available online for any future researcher or member of the public to use. Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust wanting Vollys - Unitof1 - 27th April 2012 so why dont they just digitise the grey lit......that would make it transparant easily accessioble. back to splash of the century just how much does the uk archaeology industry owe Her majesty's Revenue and Customs? I am going suggest about ?50 million- higher or lower anybody? Topic... I realise this data is freely and publicly accessible. BUT... it would be nice to remain on the topic. I understand this may be seen as relevant. .. BUT. Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust wanting Vollys - Unitof1 - 28th April 2012 what topic. Lets have a look at the wonerful world of welsh "archaeology" and HERs. It has this peculiarity http://www.ggat.org.uk/about_us/welsh_trusts.html They have a map of their territories. This map was made up by the hidden peoples. Do you have territoies in scotland and england probably in ireland and south ireland. Quote: "uniform local archaeology service " It has turned out that they basically run HERs and get paid by the hidden ones to do so. They, possibly only two, took a vat hit but have survived presumably due to emense resources that they have built up over the decades of also being the advisors to the hidden ones planning applications. Anyway they now want vollys for a very obscure reason something to do with something which they call an HER. Now I dont need an HER to do an evaluation and am always intreged by those who claim that I cant do one without an HER am always interested in what HERs might be. These territorial archaeologists subsequently have come up, off their own bat, with wilioarch and willioarch promises this Quote:For each site, find or project key information is recorded, such as its name, location, site type, period and legal status. A brief description of the remains is also entered, and we maintain a list of bibliographic sources and finds Now "we" the other type of archaeologist live in the time of oasis and as you all know wales does not. I can show you this from this map on this page http://oasis.ac.uk/england/ (which has another topic possibly -grey areas) It appears that wilioach lives in the time of the database- about twenty years behind us and they probably think powerpoint is the future. And it looks like they like to keep thier "grey literature" reports in a special place so you have to visit a cupboard accompanied by an advisor and probably the compertition in the tender and where they might charge you for something called a photocopy which is also something that was shiny twenty years ago any way I think that we have established that they might be morons who say that they can see lights over vollys so I think we should get back to trying to prove it. What I would like to know is why they have had to pay VAT. What bit of what they have been doing that was not zero rated. It seems to me that in fact they should have been claiming back vat of the London tax collectors. But then I am a bigoted racist and would say that. Glamorgan-Gwent Archaeological Trust wanting Vollys - Wax - 28th April 2012 An interesting way forward for HERs perhaps the only way for some. I do hope they have some very robust quality controls in place. many of the problems with HER data that Jack mentions in another thread are the results of ever changing staff and volunteers who perhaps do not fully understand the systems they are using . In terms of digitising grey literature, scanning documents can certainly be done by volunteers but is incredibly boring and not what most would want to spend hours (days ) doing. A properly run HER is an amazing resource I do wonder if Units problem with HERs is that he/she has never encountered one that is using all its capabilities. |
