Sexual harassment - Kiwi12 - 1st February 2013
Hello Unitof1. I haven't yet been to the police, mainly because at the time I was absolutely gutted that my first job in archaeology ended so badly. For the first part, I was only interested in forgetting the experience. Having had time to think over what has happened with some clarity, I am looking into speaking to a division of the police that deals with these particular issues. For me, it isn't really about what has happened to myself, but I am extremely concerned - convinced in fact, that this individuals behaviour will escalate into the realms of criminal offences. As for naming, I would absolutely love to name the company for awareness, but unfortunately, there may be repercussions for BAJR. I have spoken recently to the other woman and we have decided to inform the police, so at the very least, they have something on record. To reiterate, I am CONVINCED that this persons behaviour will escalate from being a sex pest into something far more serious.

Quote:would you like the organisation to be named here on bajr?
Would not be helpful. In fact - likely to prejudice any form of investigation that may take place.
I would however, like to hear from the other witness who was willing to stand up. and shame on those that think keeping your head down is a suitable response.

kiwi12 Get it reported. I can only imagine that at the very least it will give you peace of mind. I would like to say that these types of thing dont just happen in archaeology but some how that sounds very wrong and if you say that its very rare in archaeology then I think that it makes it even worse. The truth is that preditors look for environments where their victims are most vunerable. That this is happening suggests that archaeology and presumably site based archaeology might actually be prone to sexual harassment. Whilst you were working were you getting possible promises of future work from the company?
Sexual harassment - Kiwi12 - 1st February 2013
Constantly. I was told almost daily that I would have future work with them if I moved nearer to the site manager and that I should stay with him in his flat until I found a place of my own. I was also told when I informed him that I wouldn't be moving and certainly not staying with him on the off chance that there might be work, that I was noncommittal and didn't take the work seriously. He would also play the staff against each other with malicious rumours so that they felt isolated and as though they had to fight for limited positions of work. As you understand, the environment became absolutely awful to work within. The senior staff knew about these issues as did many of the other archaeologists but, like myself, the graduates were in positions where we needed to protect our jobs.

I apologise in advance Kiwi12 and Nell 23 but I get acused of hijacking threads and I do have my own adendas going on. Currently I am very anti salaries and the ifa and behind it is that I think that archaeology should be based on copyright. The truth is that the ifa is geared to archaeologists who somehow call themselves archaeologists but dont rely on the bread and butter of filling in a context sheets. At the very least the IFA is a limited company and its workers dont work on short intermittant sites. I presume that you were filling in context sheets. I would see that as my copyright and if I was in dispute with somebody I would see it as my right to withdraw my copyright from them. Did you sign any documents related to copyright. I ask this although even if you didnt the ifa would probably claim that the copyright that you produced rests with the company, if not the owner of the site.

Nell 23 Wrote:So as you can see, other than the other female on site who was also subjected to similar harassment and bullying, no one else supported me.
That is a dreadful situation Nell!! Although I am totally in the dark as to the company and individuals involved, I would like to offer an apology on behalf of the vast majority of male archaeologists, who I know would never subject female colleagues to that kind of harassment. The harassment is totally out of order, but the failure of your colleagues to stand up for you is a very sad indictment on UK archaeology in 2013.....what a bunch of pathetic cowards!! I hope that your future involvement with archaeology is more enjoyable and with more enlightened colleagues.
Uo1: i think the 3 month limit might be the cut-off date with which to lodge an action with the Industrial Tribunal.....however if you believe that a criminal case of harassment or assault has taken place there is no time-limit in notifying the police (as for example the reports of assault in the Savile et al cases being reported at the moment).

can you give us a bit of context kiwi12? what part of the world were you working at that time - what kind of site etc
Sexual harassment - Oxbeast - 1st February 2013
No, don't post more context. More identifying details might break the AUP. Not sure it would make any difference what kind of site it was on. Pretty disturbing story though...

Does it particularly matter? Atrocious behaviour is atrocious, I really hope you can get some resolution that reassures you that it/he has/will stop/be stopped. Police does sound like the best option for you.

It was in South West England and on an engineering project. My apologies for not being more specific, but it is with regards for BAJR that I cannot 'name and shame'. Especially with a police report being filed.
