BAJR at Water Newton - Galarch - 8th August 2007

Aching Knees may be interested to note that metal detectors are sometimes used on pipelines. On one occassion a transect survey was carried out along the whole route (approx 60km if my memory is correct) - similar in sample area to fieldwalking. The results were surprisingly dissapointing though and I am keener on the more intensive pre-stripping/post-stripping and spoil heap scan of areas of known or significantly raised potential. On sites where I am involved we try and use detectorists recommended by the curators/PAS as units seldom have in-house capability - a shame I think.

I personally don't have any issues with rallies so long as they are conducted in a responsible manner and all results are fed back to the PAS/HER. Will the eventual programme be sufficiently 'educational' or will the media be more interested in the booty?

BAJR at Water Newton - BAJR Host - 8th August 2007

Media does what media does (though BBC are ... shall we say a bit more careful just now given recent events)

I think the key statement - and the point of this rally... "conducted in a responsible manner and all results are fed back to the PAS/HER" and this is the case here... otherwise I would not be involved... ain't even getting paid!

Lets hope something nice turns up?

By nice do we mean shiny or interesting?

Well done to the PAS people freely giving up their own time to help on this. It's more than just a job.

The reality is we have to cooperate with events like this because they will happen with or without us.

Be surprised if anything much turns up as the area has probably already been thoroughly nighthawked.

"many finds donated to the local museum" er, not all finds?

BAJR at Water Newton - darksider - 9th August 2007

I recently did a talk for a group of detectorists about the archaeological finds from a large linear scheme in their region and they told me that they had previously detected in a number of areas along the route and had found loads of items and were very suprised when I told them that there was no actual archaeological sites in these areas.

BAJR at Water Newton - BAJR Host - 9th August 2007

Some good points there...

Some good answers .. I hope..

Can archaeologists tell me hand on heart that they don't like a nice find.. or call people across when they find a 'nice find'??
and if you find a coin.. a gold one say... what will you be talking about in the tea hut?

Many finds is my way of saying... I can ask people to donate finds.. but I can't tell people (in scotland I can) ... If people, willingly, and knowing why they are donating finds.. then I will be happy.. if they don't I will be sad, but won't hold it against them, as long as I have a record of the find.. and where it comes from.. a grot or a pin or a button... do we really need them in storage? as long as we know where they are.. or what they were? We also have to remember that the number of 'finds' on a site.. includes about 90% ring pulls, tractor parts, bottle tops, levi buttons.. (I know... I have seen it) and of the artefacts.. even they can be whittled down (thats where the on site presence by archaeologist find specilaists or FLOs is important) to ones that don't really add up to anything other than Fe obj...

It is interesting .. and why would it be that finds can be found in the plough soil, but the archaeolgists found no sites that went with them... again... location location location matters... were the finds over a large area.. randomly spread.. or concentrated in clusters... and if no site there.. then why the artefact cluster..? hmmmmmmm interesting

As you say David it is a very important rally and those involved have done a superb job of organising it and planning it.

Its a chance for all to work together and record everything, whether its a SHINY NICE! piece of pottery or anything that is of historical interest to PAS and the teams involved in recording over the weekend.

looking forward to catching up with everyone involved and the PAS team also that we have grown to know over the years.
