No curator can insist on anyone in a company being a member of the IFA. This would be a restraint of trade. And, obviously, the IFA is not a chartered organisation. What you can ask for is for people working in the county to demonstrate experience equivalent to a certain IFA grade. PPG16 makes reference to archaeologists being suitably qualified and experienced.

That makes sense HB. I was sure that something along these lines was discussed on the forum some time ago, but I must have misremembered - perhaps it is that sometimes invitations to tender have the proviso that a director or equivalent must be a memeber of the IFA [?]
I still suspect that there are many units that are non-RAOs, but the person heading them is an IFA member. (I suppose that it can allow companies to make claims that blur the line, like "we are members of the IFA...").
My question is still: Can an IFA member who heads a company that is not an RAO be held accountable for the actions of that company? Has it ever happened? If it can happen, then this gives the IFA disciplinary procedure scope beyond the ranks of the RAOs on employment issues like pay. And if it can't happen, why not!?

I think that really is one for the IFA, however it is likely to involve them having to examine how decision making is structured within the organisation and the extent to which the IFA member has responsibility. Obviously the guidelines for individuals are different for those applying to RAOs. If the individual breaches the individual guidelines in the course of their work then there would be a case.

Along the same lines as previous coments such as the website being slightly missleading with reguards to the ifa membership issue i have to admit I am a bit confused by how archpeople can claim to have 15years experience.
The website only started up properly a few weeks ago and i worked with Natalie a year ago when she had less than 6months digging exp and was in her early twenties!!
Is this 15years maybe a combination of the exp of all the people on the books?
I have to admit i did find the comment on the website deliberatly missleading

It must be a combination of exp. and perhaps the site is just trying to give clients a feeling of confidence.
It could be seen as misleading... but then again.. BAJR punches above its weight.. by sounding bigger than one bloke and his mum..

The Invisible Man wrote "Archpeople also claim to be "members of the IFA"."
Not only that but a colleague of mine has just pointed out that they actually claim "We are Members of the IFA" - The capitalised 'M' makes this even more misleading, as it implies that 'they' are MIFAs... are they? from what other people have written, it doesn't sound like it.

One could say they are members at Affiliate level (student) not MIFA
again they are doing nothing really wrong, only perhaps using the term member in a way that does not make the level of membership implicit.
Perhaps this leads to a debate about whether the IFA should revamp the system where you are either a Member or Affiliate .. and no other terms...?

Its already painfully clear that anyone can make grand claims regarding their real or indeed, imagined IFA membership status. The IFA will do nothing until someone external informs them and even then-will advertise the offending companies services shortly thereafter.Makes a complete mockery of the idea that the IFA can recommend ANYONE to potential clients. As a point of order-who cares what Archpeoples IFA status is if all they intend to do is act as an employment agency? What is their "employment agency" professional status?
