I don't mean to denigrate any of the individuals who started a career in archaeology on the MSC, or archaeologists without degrees, because there are plenty of good ones. I know that some MSC schemes did give a few individuals a good start in archaeology.
The scheme as a whole, however, was basically a way of keeping the unemployed off the street, and in the 2 schemes that I worked on there was no-one else on site who cared two hoots about archaeology either when they started or when they left. It was bad for the archaeology, because there was no post-ex funding. I have posted before about how that problem was addressed, and how it affected ongoing site work.
