Trowelmonkey - Bradford University have been running an integrated 9month placement scheme (although many people worked the summers holidays either side as well) in their undergrad courses for years.
You could either split the placements and do a couple of different types or stick with one. They certainly used to include placements in field units, English Heritage, local authorities, museums, long term university research projects, laboratories for scientific analysis and overseas placements.
Some were paid, some were paid a subsistence and some were unpaid depending on the nature of the placement. As with anything a placement is in part what you want make of it and the more you put in the more you get out.
I don't know anyone who regretted taking the placement year and its always been a plus on my CV.
