The XXIst International Limes (Roman Frontiers) Congress 2009 at Newcastle
upon Tyne
Bursaries for students and early career delegates
The Congress, hosted by Tyne and Wear Museums, will take place at Newcastle
University from Monday, August 17th to Sunday, 23rd August, 2009. It will be
preceded by a day excursion to York and followed by alternative three-day
tours, to Hadrian's Wall or Roman Scotland. For further details see

The Limes Congresses are the main international forum for exchanging ideas
and information on the development of Roman frontiers. Excursions are an
important part of the Congresses. There will be no full tour of Hadrian's
Wall during the Congress so as not to duplicate the Pilgrimage of Hadrian's
Wall which takes place in the previous week (8th-14th August 2009). The
three day-tours during the Congress will be to Roman military sites in
north-west and north-east England and in Yorkshire. There will also be an
opportunity to visit the outpost forts of Risingham and High Rochester and
one of the marching camps along the main route into Scotland.
A limited number of bursaries will be available for final-year
undergraduates and post-graduates, or for delegates who are at an early
stage in their careers. The bursaries will cover accommodation costs and the
conference fee, together with a modest contribution to travel costs (£50).
They will also cover the cost of excursions during the Congress but not the
pre- and post-Congress excursions. Contributions to the poster session from
successful applicants will be very welcome.
Applicants should state why they are interested in Roman frontier studies
and how they expect to benefit from attendance at the Congress (1,000 words
maximum, in English, German, French or Spanish). The name of a referee
should be included: either the student's academic supervisor, or the
employer. It should be made clear that the applicant has explored other
sources of support for their attendance. Funding is limited, and the
Congress bursaries will be very much a last resort.
