I visited Regensburg recently, saw some impressive big bits of fortress wall in situ. I have been reading around the subject of this particular site and it appears that there was no timber phase (at least as far as the perimeter wall goes). I may have missed something but I really cannot find any references. There were a couple of forts in the area but not directly near the site of the later fortress. Is there any precedent for the initial phase of a fortress wall being in stone? I have read around Isca and Inchtuthill and the stone perimeter replaced earlier turf ramparts. Does anyone know?
