My point is - they're all different. Recognising them individually on site will probably be almost impossible in most cases - they decay beautifully too. Surely better just to realise that you're in a cess deposit (the greenish colour usually, as you say), and adopt some good old fashioned, well-tested sampling proceedures? 30-50 litres in a box and a column sample through the section should do it. Let the environmentalists poke around in it and decide what the people had for dinner!
Having said that, I did find one desiccated in a drain once when I was digging abroard in a hot country. It looked a bit like that old white crumbly dog poo that you don't seem to see any more.
