Mate in Eire just got demoted (from supervisor)after taking three days leave to attend an archaeology course in the UK. Anyone know the legal standpoint on this?

If your mate wants to look at Irish employment law he could try:
http://www.ucc.ie/law/irishlaw/subjects/...ment.shtml For your mate to argue he has been unfairly treated (and with possible recourse to a tribunal if he considers his treatment is effectively 'constructive dismissal) he would need in the first instance to have worked for the company for a year. I would imagine that the 'demotion' was based on his non-availability rather than the fact he was attending a UK training course. His contract should state how much leave he was entitled to, when he could take leave and how much notice of leave he needed to give. It is very hard to fight these things alone (whether in UK or Ireland). Could your mate contact his trade union or the union that represents his workplace?

Would have been with them a couple of months. Had already booked leave to attend. I'd say it's the site director being a &%$$$!!*. Will pass on the info to him, so thanks for the link.
